Post subject:  broken timing belt
Just figured out that our 2004 jeep wrangler 2.4 engine timing belt broke. We tried cranking it over a few times before figuring out what it was. From what i understand the valves may have bent or broke trying to start it before finding the problem. the camshaft gears are not lined up and want to know if it is ok to try to line them up to replace the belt. or is there a certain way to go about getting them back in sync without causing damage?

2.4 is the gas engine,same engine used in noens.


Unless you were spinning the engine at 5000+rpm's you most likely did not do any damage as it's not a interference engine but the valves can contact each other but only if the belt breaks at high rpm.

Unless you were spinning the engine at 5000+rpm's you most likely did not do any damage as it's not a interference engine but the valves can contact each other but only if the belt breaks at high rpm.

The non US jeep diesels (older wranglers and Cherokee kj - aka liberty in us) came I believe with 2 engines, 2.8 and 2.4 diesel engines.

Edit: in EU, you pay taxes based on engine capacity, this is the main reason of the 2.4 crd.

More than likely some of the rockers are bent/broken. I'd take off the valve cover and inspect. Replace the broken rockers and time your camshafts. Then time your engine,then put back your valve cover and the new timing belt and turn clockwise the crankshaft (by hand) few times and see if there is any binding. Keep in mind you're fighting some cylinder pressure so take it easy. If you can turn over few times without binding, then you're good to go..

The OP relates to the 2.4 petrol/gas powered twin cam engine. It was also installed in the KJ among others. It holds no relation to VM Motori.

That would be the 2.5 CRD not the 2.4.

You and lacabrera are correct, it's 2.5 crd not 2.4.
