ya, these mount into the head and the intake sits on these.

Not sure if they are needed other than for alignment.

Thanks! How crucial are these as I have the intake on and torqued. Everything seemed to line up fine

They aren't critical. Like sir Sam mentioned. They pretty much are just for alignment. They usually stay in the head but on occasion I have had one or both come out

I haven't really paid attention but do these direct any oil that comes out of the head up around onto the cams?

I'm going to go with not needed right now though unless someone can show they are needed for oiling.

I don't agree with the above, The dowels will lock the valve cover to the head, its unlikely but without them its possible the cover could move with the force of the rotation of the cams. They are there for a reason not just for assembly.

Lacabrera is correct. The dowels are for precision alignment. I made that same mistake and went back into my engine to install them..........I'd mistakenly put them in my pocket when I tore the engine down and my wife found them in the washing machine. :oops:
