yes..the 2 broken rockers are brand new.. thankfully the rest look fine...

this weekend I have a look at the old ones..maybe they're fine too and I didn't need to change them.

looks like it'll be Monday before the parts arrive.. :(
I was hoping to get the Jeep running again this weekend

Take your time on getting each cam pinned and cam gears tightened. I'd say something went weird in that process. Also check the camshafts and make sure the lobes aren't messed up

the cams were fine...

its all back together and it runs.. :)

now I have a boost leak...I guessing one of the gaskets on the elbow is leaking a little..new ones on order

I think I know what happened...
when I put the timing belt on, I had the flywheel pin in place..seemed like a good idea, but it's not..
leave the cam pins or the cams fixed..but have the flywheel pin out..
this way its possible to rotate the crank about 5 degrees ccw from 90degrees.
this allows the belt to be tight between the crank and the fuel pump...
rotate the crank back to 90degrees after routing the belt, then install the tensioner..all while
making sure the belt does come loose anywhere...
set the tensioner and rotate the engine over 3-10 times to make sure the tensioner is adjusted
and the timing marks are right.

so what happened..
I put it together with the crack 1 tooth off... crank rotated 1 clockwise from 90degrees
at first the rockers weakened..this allowed it to run but lacking in preformace
then the rockers broke completely...causing a complete failure on cylinder #1( no power, thankfully no damage).

You should never be moving the crank when doing the timing belt. Leave the cam pulleys loose when putting the belt on. Then tension it, then torque the pulleys to 80 ft. Lbs. Then rotate 2 rotations and re insert cam locks to insure they are in time. Check tensioner and adjust if needed

Absolutely, the crankshaft should remain pinned and the cam pulleys loose until after the tensioner is set and torqued and then torque the cam pulleys!!! Then and only then unpin the crankshaft...

keeping the crank pinned is what caused the problem.
there was slack between the fuel pump and the crank. when I removed
the pins and rotated everything the crank was off...

I guess if the pump was rotated taking out the slack..this should
work while keeping everything pinned...hum...maybe in 100kmiles
I get a chance to try this..

This is the problem COrobotchicken demonstrates in his Jeep Liberty Diesel Timing Belt Replacement Part 5 video, and he turns the crank in order to get the belt on properly. I used the same method he shows, and it worked well for me. Otherwise it seemed impossible to get that extra belt tooth out from between the fuel pump and crank.

But wouldn't you then end up with one extra belt tooth between the intake cam and fuel pump?

I don't think so. because the cam gears aren't fixed at this point.

if you were just changing the timing belt and didn't loosen the cam gears you could have a problem

Oh, yeah you're right. I was assuming those were already torqued down.
