as in time for another timing belt.. this time its the belt..and all the other parts the head studs/bolts...one at a time...there's a small coolant leak that I've not tracked down...so while I'm there... the rockers..since I have to change the head studs...I don't think there's a problem, but... I'll try to collect the head stud data, but I don't the click torque wrench type anymore..I have a nice digital torque gauge. I got tired of breaking bolts with the click type..the don't always click... while I'm in there anything else I should look for.. EGR - it broke...don't..I'm not fixing it.. I'll check the boost hoses...so for no problems. -dkenny |

I also did the ARP's and my stock bolts were all over the map in terms of torque. Some of them I was sweating trying to break them free on others seemed like they were barely on, <80 ft-lbs. |

Yipes. But that variation is why I was asking about the data - So that anyone confused about why they should do the studs, can see and decide for themselves if they are happy that the factory bolt torque can be 40-50 or more pounds variation within the same engine. |

While you have it apart, you may want to consider installing a Week's elbow kit since your EGR is broke anyway and get rid of all of the EGR crap including the FCV, EGR valve, and EGR cooler along with all the EGR coolant hoses which are possible future coolant leak points.... ![]() |

egr broke..might not be quite right..its disabled...but I would like to remove more of the unneeded hoses... I'm not complaining its been almost 100k miles since the last belt..that was only because the CP3/fuel meter valve died.. atleast this time I can rent the proper holding tools.. -dkenny |

its done to the head studs... time to change them one at a time. had a slight interruption..I was trying to use an 11mm deep wall socket.. first head bolt hit 130FTlb... time for an impact socket...of the store.. only issue found so far.. the timing belt has a small tear. I'll post a photo later.. haven't checked the rockers yet..after the bolts ![]() -dkenny |

well phooey... finished getting it all back together and changed the oil.. took it for a test drive...for a while it was fine..maybe a little sluggish because it was cold? about 4 miles into the drive it acts like its missing..press on the pedal and black smoke? thoughts? injector? rocker fell off? -dkenny |

You either popped a boost hose loose or forgot to connect the vacuum line to the turbo. |

it went from running ok to not suddenly.. I can see the low power and black smoke from the turbo/or boost hose... but the running rough suddenly?? -dkenny |

I know what happened..the timing slipped..why? worse what did it do the new rockers I just put in? valve damage? I hope not... more to tear apart again.. ![]() done with the tear apart.. 4 injector orings and 2 rockers.. #1 exhaust broke.. not bad..but how to be sure it doesn't happen again?? -dkenny |

Either... A. you didnt torque the sprockets properly or B. you didnt set the tensioner properly I assume you put the timing pins back in and found that something didn't line up. How far off was it? When you pull the timing cover off again, check to see if the tensioner threads are stripped. Its happened to me and others but is usually discovered during the assembly process. |

the nuts were at 80ft-lbs.. and not loose when I removed them the tension was still in place( the arm just to the right of the black spring). threads not stripped.. I know I hand cranked it around more than 6 times... hum ??? I lined everything up starting with the crank...and noticed the cam marks were not in the same place I left them( less than 5miles of driving)...so I rotated the crank until cam locking pins would install... the crank was then out of place...removed the belt. rotated the crank back(ccw) until the flywheel pin would install...now just waiting for more parts... -dkenny |

Sounds like you may have knocked a rocker off while re installing the valve cover. Did you spin each cam after you had the valve cover back on to see if you can hear/feel any difference between each cylinder? It may take some new rockers |

Post subject: | Re: its about that time.. |
no I didn't spin the cams after I put the cover back on.. its possible that I knock a rocker off..its easy to do... the #1 exhaust rockers are toast.. new rockers on the way.. any tips on how to get the copper crush washers out of the injector holes? i needed new o rings and the only to get them was with the copper washer.. -dkenny |

The o-rings are generic and not critically important, the crush washers are the important bit and you could buy them separately. As for getting them out of the hole, I've done it two ways: Use a shotgun cleaning kit, the very narrow copper brush will fit down the hole and usually pull them right out. If not, then take one of the long valve cover bolts and lightly twist it into the hole, it will jam in the copper almost perfectly and pull it out. |

Are the 2 rockers you mentioned new ones you put in and now broke in the middle? I use a long skinny screwdriver if I have them stuck down in the head. They are one time use so make sure you use 4 new washers |
