Love Slickdeals, but I became addicted and had to delete the app.

I've been getting some excellent oil deals lately. Got 5-5 qt jugs of Pennzoil Platinum for $9 each back in november.

It it has NO diesel API ratings!
It does not have diesel CJ or CI ratings...

Mobil 1 0W-40 oil is rated: API SN, SM, SL, SJ (oil listed in the sale)

Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Oil is rated: API CJ-4, CI-4 PLUS, CI-4, CH-4/ SM, SL, SJ

Mobil 1 0w40 is the only official oil recommended by Chrysler for this engine. I believe they say it meets cf rating, but it has not been "certified".

According to ExxonMobil, Mobil 1 FS 0W-40 is of the following quality:

API CF

VW 503 01

https://www.mobil.com/English-US/Passen ... 1-FS-0W-40

Personal opinion: this isn't the best diesel oil for the crd, but it's definitely OK, especially for a gde tuned engine.

Over a decade ago the KJ CRD Owner's Manual said use SAE0W40 Mobil1 Synthetic Engine Oil that meets API categories CF or better and the requirements of Daimler Chrysler Material Standard MS-10725 (whatever that is) and if you cannot find SAE0W-40, then SAE5W-40 Mobil1 Synthetic Engine Oil is acceptable. Why DCJ made this recommendation escapes me as category CF (see http://www.api.org/products-and-service ... categories) was long out of date by model year 2005. The rating that should have been used at that time was CI-4 and even that has been superseded by CJ-4 and CK-4. In today's "oil" market there are several good full synthetic choices suitable for use in the KJ CRD in the 0W40 or 5W40 range. Personally I would not go a) higher as in 10W40 or b) for long change intervals (e.g. past 6,000 miles).

PS Amazon has Rotella T6 for $22.93 per gallon if you "subscribe and save". You can do the subscribe and save for a few months to stock up and then cancel if you desire.

I would never run a non-diesel rated oil in a diesel engine! Diesel rated engine oils provides for soot loading of the oil from the combustion process that happens in all diesel engines with special additives and conditioners to handle the soot. If you care about your diesel engine, use a Diesel API rated oil!!!
The ratings are engineering standards and are there for a purpose...

..... and just to save 10 bucks if it'snot a recommended grade for a CRD??? Probably breaks down to maybe $1.50 month if you change oil every 6 mo. I use Amsoil and change every 12 months / 10k. Do the math. Oil analysis (as needed or want to) will tell you how the oil is performing and what (if any) excessive contaminants are present. OTR truckers bible.

I have had the Mobil 1 0w40 in the crd for years, all oil analysis were excellent. The reason I now use it every now and then is the higher price vs Rotella t6. That's not to say that the 0w40 is better than any other one, I'm just saying that Mobil 1 0w40 is ok for the crd. I haven't had it more than 8k per oil change.

I'm sure most oil will be "ok" if they meet the minimum requirements of OEM on a daily driver conditon. BUT under some unforeseen or abnormal condition (extreme heat or cold), is the factor I put more value in. I use my Jeep in occasional (1/4 of the time) not so great conditions: slow 4lo for hours in not so wonderful conditions. I for one don't want the minimum requirement.

You really think I, a lifetime member, with over 1000 posts to my credit... having done more than 14 timing belt services and 10 top end jobs in this engine, would recommend or even post an oil you can't or shouldn't use?

Please...

... don't think I said or implied not to use any oil brand. Just stated what and why I and many others use a premium grade.

Just my personal and somewhat educated opinion.

sorry I offended you.
