Purchased an 05 Liberty sport CRD. I read the noob guide. I'm looking for any info that could tell me if any of the modifications or upgrades have been made on my engine. Condition and quality look great. But it all appears to be stock.

Thanks Dave

Hard to say what might have been done without seeing the engine.

Does the fuel filter head have a light blue wire connector on it?
If not, its the old type and is prone to developing leaks.

Look down at the drivers side of the engine. Is the intake elbow a smooth curved pipe?
If not, you still have the factory intake setup.
Which is fine but you should consider installing this: https://shop.sasquatchparts.com/products/egr-delete-jeep-liberty-crd/
And delete the EGR valve.

Turn the key on with radio off, do you hear the sound of a pump turning on?
If so, you might have some sort of lift pump.

Start the engine and watch the RPMs. Does RPM immediately flare up to 1300 or so and then drop to to about 800?
If so, you likely have a GDE tune.

And if you dont know exactly when the timing belt was replaced, better plan on replacing it soon just to be safe.

Look at the engine thermostat and determine if it is a O.E. unit, if there has been some modifications, or if there is a Hot Diesel Solutions Model 001 engine thermostat assembly installed in it.

The O.E. engine thermostat is horrible, and does not get your engine up to a proper operating temperature. A PROPER upgrade should be performed for long term reliability, power, and fuel economy of your engine.

Thanks guys
The fuel line is certainly sucking in air. No blue wire at the filter/heater.
I can see that the PCU did get the factory flash in 06.
No 1300 RPM at start up.
Intake is rubber hose with braided outside lining.
I'm guessing this is all stock.
There's a dealership sticker for an oil reminder, fuel filter is labeled with date and mileage.
The previous owners took good care of it, I hope.
The good news is this is just project truck and place to empty my pockets.
The wish list is getting longer everyday

If you take a picture of the engine, without the engine cover on it obviously, and either post it or email it to me, I can tell you and everyone else can tell you exactly what they see and give you ideas on things. You have a pretty good list, but depending upon how many miles are on it right now, The previous owners might have sold it because they realized how expensive a timing belt job is if they are having a dealership do it. If there are dealership service stickers on it, that suggest that they were having the dealer do everything. This will be a very expensive vehicle if that habit is continued.

If there is not a yellow sticker under the hood from gates, then there's a very high probability that the timing belt has not been replaced, and absent a receipt from the dealership showing exactly what was changed including the timing belt, water pump, and idlers… Then the timing belt is probably original and is approaching three times it's suggested age limit. The manufacture of the belt does not recommend using them for longer than six years. Smart money is on no longer than five years or 100,000 miles.

OH OH .. the hounds are out.

Let him breathe a little before you shove your services and goods down his throat, it's sickening....

I didn't offer anything other than advice about what has possibly been done on his CRD if he provides a picture of it.

If you want me to actually advertise, that is something I am able to do as a vendor - Not that I feel the need. If someone wants assistance, they usually are directed to contact me by other people. Text postings with helpful information is freely offered.

It's all good, we all got to hustle a bit from time to time. No services were offered, just advice. Working something out with a local shop around here for the timing belt, a little too advanced for my driveway. He's trustworthy. Water pump will be changed out at the same time.
The 20 car dealership I bought it from was using it as his daily driver.
There's a 179k on the odometer. Risky I know.

At 179k 1) if miles you can assume the belt was done at least once as it's virtually impossible for an original belt to last that long or 2) if kilometers you are a bit over the distance interval for change and well past on age. Either way you need a timing belt job. On the water pump FYI it's best to change just the front half and "O" ring as getting the entire pump off is beyond difficult. Good source for parts is idParts. While in there you might consider, it is somewhat more work, popping the valve cover and inspecting the rockers/lifters.

Over on the CRD Tech page (viewforum.php?f=98) there is a post to my "library" of historic CRD post including some on the timing belt that you might find helpful. The job is not technically hard, with the right tools, but it is a bit finicky to get it done "right".

I read through that walk through, a bit too advanced for me. Too many moving parts to screw up. Very well done though. The odometer is 179k miles. Rockers are on my mind too.

Perhaps but useful guidance for a local shop if they have not done any CRD timing belts.

South Eastern New Hampshire, called the Seacoast area. All 17 miles of coast line. Yes this area notorious for vehicle rot, the truck has none.

Hey man I just saw your post. I also travel to work on these things. I don't have as much experience as jim(Geordi) but to date I have worked on 31 jeeps. I know it's kind of short notice but I'll be in Boston next week and then onto Vermont to work on one. If you are wanting work travel cost would be next to nil.

If that is too soon, I will be coming up to the NY area in the next few weeks, and we can work out the details. I can do studs, rockers, delete the egr and do the timing kit all in one day.
