LOST JEEPS :: View topic - Safe removal of transmission oil pan

Hi everyone,

Need to change oil and filters in 2006 CRD transmission, got everything ready, but can't seem to be able to drop the pan after removing most of the bolts leaving just few loose ones. Apparently the pan was sealed with RTV or something similar. Any trick or the best location to start the prying without scratching the pan/trans body? Youtube videos show using screwdriver and a hammer, but mine isn't even getting into the gap.

Alex Keep tapping the sides with a rubber mallet and gently tap a sharp flathead screwdriver in between the pan and the body, it will come apart.

best tool for the job is something the size of a power hacksaw blade, about two mil thick and 25 mil wide. Sharpen like a wood chisel and drive in carefully while holding horizontal with the bevel on the underside. Screwdrivers are too thick and not wide enough. Hacksaw blade makes a perfect scraper for removing any remaining gasket adhesive. John

A thin putty knife/scraper also works real good. Gently tap it in between the pan and the transmission body and pry down, RTV will turn loose. If you use a screwdriver, be careful and do not score or gouge the aluminum facing which could cause a leak point later on.

Some tips for putting the pan back on. 1. Scrape the old rtv of the trans and pan 2. Use a gasket on the pan and use rtv to stick it to the pan 3. Put a light coat of oil on the gasket surface that will seal against the trans 4. Do not use a air ratchet to tighten the pan bolts. Use a 1/4 drive ratchet and hand tighten all bolts evenly.
