I recently did a top end job, been running really good since but this morning on way to work stalled a several times while driving. Coast to stop, starts normally but if you hold around 2000rpm it stutters and some white smoke came out for a bit. Restart and it will idle perfectly for as long as you want. start driving and it acts like fuel shuts off and have to coast to stop, then starts fine. I did refuel right before I parked it the night before so I was thinking bad fuel or water but shouldn't the filter mitigate that? I have a lift pump in the box I was fixing to install but need to figure this out first! thanks |

Sounds like air in fuel, bad fuel, gelled fuel and/or a plugged fuel filter. Make sure the filter is screwed on tight and remove the WIF sensor on filter and see what comes out. Sent from my Pixel using Tapatalk |

Drop your fuel tank, clean it out, install the in-tank fuel pump along with a new fuel filter and I bet your problem will be solved!!! Your engine will actually run better... |

X2 Sounds like a perfectly opportune time. |

Ok I took your advice and dropped tank, did find a nasty old non working electric inline fuel pump up there that had leaky fuel lines> Installed Carter fuel pump kit (just finished) and was confident problem was solved. But as we know CRDs are tricky. Same problem. If you hold throttle around 2000rpm it misses and white smoke comes out of PVC but it idles perfectly no strange sounds, Rev a little bit and sounds fine but around 2-3000rpm it stutters quite a bit. Not sure what else to do. Also the tank looked clean inside. Thanks |

White smoke generally occurs in a diesel engine when the diesel fuel goes through the engine and reaches the exhaust without having been completely burned. This can occur due to low compression in one cylinder, problems with the fuel injection timing, or a possible defective fuel injector.... |

Changed # 2 injector with spare because it sounded different than the rest with stethoscope. But No change, Starts & idles perfectly slowly raise to 1700rpm & starts to stutter and white smoke comes out of PVC. Revs up, no stutter over 3000rpm, weird. Think the Dealership scanner shows injector operation status?? |

Took all injectors down to have tested @ MD Diesel, update soon |

So I had eight injectors tested, four were ok, cleaned and tested on a Bosch common rail tester. Reinstalled and still have miss from 1700-2400 but smooth above and below that. Going to recheck timing. |

Each injector has an identification number on the top cap. Remember to program the ECM for which injector is at which cylinder. |

can you check fuel rail pressure , also MPROP valve my be sticking ? in my experience with this engine , injector calibrations codes does not give problems , seams ECM is so smart and it can run this engine with out proper CALIBRATION CODE , yes it shut be programmed but not necessary. also make sure that fuel injection shop is professional ,and can provide full report and print out of the test they perform , hook in up injector on old modify bench test some times can lead to misdiagnoses , as me how i know. |

The engine will most likely run, but won't necessarily run properly/efficiently without the correct injector calibrations set up in the PCM.

Update; Check timing it was spot on, tensioner, belt etc looked good. Put it back together, dumped a gallon of diesel injector cleaner in the tank and its running ok, still slight miss at 2000ish. (But not as bad) If I hold throttle at miss rpm, little white smoke when it misses. I think maybe I overreacted to some bad fuel! After dropped valves and blown headgaskets I think I'm getting paranoid! |

In light of your problems, You should add a secondary fuel filter if you have not already done so! Read this thread and you will see why! > viewtopic.php?f=5&t=86473 Also, add some Marvel Mystery Oil to your fuel tank along with the diesel fuel cleaner; it will help lubricate your injectors and fuel pump!

like WW explained and like always yes fuel filtration is a key to our CRD , but my wish is if VM did install PD injectors back in early 2005 like VW , this engine would be much better , reason i say this , my 04 jetta BEW with 400000 km can drink anything , i had cheap or ,expensive filters no problem ,runs like no tomorrow , lift pump no issues , egr no problem , clutch no won't to burn up , well I'm going to park this thing and put some insurance on the jeep and drive this summer so i can rep or to you guys if i get any fuel related problems with my CRD , |
