I have a 06 CRD sport, auto. Recently it started knocking, the more I step on the acceleralor, the louder it knocks. It also is blowing black smoke, even on 'granny' gentle accel. Has plenty of power, running smooth and even. Help! Don't know what to do. My mechanics are diesel guys, but the Liberty is new to them. I am cash strapped. The truck has about 110k on it, have not changed the timing belt yet. |

Where are you and can you post a sound bite of the noise for us to review? |

Likely a bad injector. I wouldn't run it at all. You could go from a $200 eBay injector to a tear down for a rod bearing. |

you stated that engine runs smooth , no misfire or rattle noise , so knock and black smoke and plenty power , hmmmm , then check turbo and see if intercooler is full of oil ? any codes CEL ? if injectors need to be tested we have procedure for it , but if it runs smooth like you say , start from air filter work your way toward turbo and CAC and some times this thing has them rockers you know about them right they can play some funny things with valve train that you can't see with naked eye . |

Yes, it runs smooth. Starts right up, good power. The first thing I noticed was the smoke, black smoke on accel, much more than usual. No idiot lights on the dash. The knocking started suddenly, now she knocks on accelerate, or even when parked if you goose the accelerator. I checked the oil, and the level is fine. |

I ran across this thread and I am having a similar problem. My engine idles smooth and sounds normal. If I give it any accelerator at all it blows black smoke, even at minimum acceleration. It will accelerate to about 55 mph, but then starts to shake some and has trouble accelerating past 65. It has a knock starting around 2k rpm. I have checked the turbo (no play in shaft, spools fine), the vacuum system, the cac hoses and changed the map sensor. I noticed the oil looked and smelled burnt even though the oil only had a few hundred miles on it, so I changed the oil. Oil already smells burned again after about a half hour of run time. I think I have gained a half quart on my oil dipstick in half hour of run time and 2 weeks of sitting; but I can't be certain the oil didn't just settle out a little high on the dipstick after the last oil change. I am thinking that the problem is likely a leaking injector, but I am not sure how to test this. Any suggestions? I appreciate any help I can get, the Libby has been sitting for about 3 weeks with this problem, and I really need it back on the road

Whichever injector is returning the least fuel is bad. I used a test kit like this one. Available from ebay or amazon. |

Perhaps it's over fueling or the fuel doesn't burn properly and it goes out with a black smoke from the exhaust. If you are not very experienced with diesel, I'd recommend to to visit knowledgeable mechanic at least for the first time. |

It turned out to be injector #3. Found one on line for $400. The mechanic replaced it and it seems much better and less smoky. |
