Yeah, that same usage (non-4WD-familiar people in winter conditions) is why the full-time setting is useful. Seems that the donor vehicle that this boneyard case came from may have also replaced it at some point... This is not a 242 Selec-trac, it does not have the full-time position. It seems to be a 241 command-trac case.

Oh well, I was going to rebuild the other one anyway. This one will now be a spare, unless someone wants it.

My 2006 Liberty CRD is missing the red tag on the transfer case. How do I know which transfer case I have? Thanks

How many positions can you move the handle through? The Selec-Trac 242 case has 5, the Command-Trac 241 has 4. The missing position is the full-time 4wd with the differential.

The handle sits at 2wd, then I pull 1 time for 4WD-Part time, then again for 4WD-Full time, Neutral, then 4WD LOW.

You have the 242 selec trac.
I'm pretty sure every 05-06 Liberty CRD came with this tranfer case.

Does it sound like a chain dragging underneath? I really only hear in when windows down and over 20mph. Check the color of the fluid. Mine was still transparent red but signs of grey. Also, do this using the top plug. I replaced my entire front cv axles because I thought it was the CV's, but after the change, sound still there. But I found the 2 front axle seals leaking. So that's fixed now.

Thank you...I think there is a sticker on the top of the transfer case, but I have not
investigated it yet. Fixed the AC today with a Low Limit switch...

You have the 242, that is the correct number of positions. And while every CRD did come with that transfer case (It is a 242-J) apparently the 3.7 versions didn't all come with 4x4, but the ones that did might have had different gearing for the low range. I don't know how much of a difference, this is just what a transmission shop told me while they were procuring the right casing for me.

All 242's(select trac) have the same gearing, all the 231's(command trac) have the same gearing also and it's the same as the 242 and even the 241's(6 speed manuals only) have the exact same ratio which is 2.72:1 low range. So every single 4x4 KJ,regardless of engine, trans,or t-case #, has the exact same gearing for the t-case which is 1:1 in 2wd/high range 4wd and 2.72:1 low range.

Now don't get the 241 confused with the TJ's RockTrac 241 which is a modified version with 4:1,basically a HD case with a terraflex 4:1 kit installed.

Since the introduction of the chain driven t-case 99.5% have all been 2.72:1 low range.

I've noticed this chain (or something metallic) dragging sound before too. People say theirs made a noise before dying, but no one describes the sound. What does a transfer case sound like before it dies in this manner?

Mine doesn't sound like that. I get a loud bang and the feeling of someone hitting my seat with a hammer. While moving at 55 or so and then letting the throttle off suddenly.

The next big question..Is the chain 1" with 49 links? Kinda would like to gather parts prior to operation.

Based on what I saw inside it and what TJKJ said above - that all the KJ cases are the same gearing... I'd say "probably" and go with that. I didn't count the links on the chain, but it was a big honker and about 1" wide.
