Finally got around to changing motor mounts.

Spent a couple hours yesterday changing both motor mounts. Wasn't horrible, but not a lot of fun. The sound came from the drivers side I thought, but my hearing isn't the best. Most of the posts I read when figuring out the rattle seemed to say the passenger side usually went first. So like an idiot I did the passenger side first, and it wasn't the one. Driver's side though, rattled like a chew toy. Only hiccup came as I was buttoning up. Broke u-joint on my extension, so I have to pick up another to finish tightening things down. It's got to be age, my Libby only has about 42k miles.

Nice work. I hate doing the driver side. Have you changed the timing belt? It's due by age even though it has low mileage

I was amazed at the difference in noise at idle after I replaced both of mine and how much it quieted it down....
Never knew motor mounts could make that much noise at idle.... :shock:

I wonder if this is the noise that has been driving me nuts. I've checked everything except motor mounts I didn't think they could cause noise. I mainly hear it when coming to a stop at idle or in reverse.

Motor mounts have been on my to do list for far too long.
I need to get off my butt and replace them.

Very likely. And one of the less expensive mysterious noises to fix.

Geordie did the timing belt, studs, and weeks kit in November of 15. Only put 6k on it since. Keep saying I'm gonna sell it but then don't. Guess I'm a glutton for punishment.

I too had never considered a motor mount rattling at idle, I had replaced both the belt tensioner and alternator override pulley trying to eliminate the rattling noise at idle which was worse if AC compressor was engaged: so I was truly amazed at the difference when I changed out all mounts on my CRD! :shock:

After I got the new ones installed, I found that the left (drivers side) mount when shook in hand, had a very audible rattling noise internally!

According to what I have read, they are "hydraulic" type motor mounts and are very different than conventional just rubber bonded to metal motor mounts that I am very familiar with. :roll:

My driver's side one also had something rattling inside. The passenger side one was split very nearly in half.

I started with the decoupler pulley. The rattle was only there when idling, usually when the nose was pointed downhill. Under load, nothing. Was driving me nuts.

Finally got around to changing motor mounts.
