I've opened several engines with the dents of glow plug tips in the pistons, valves, and sleeve scars. You're probably OK, but it's possible that you'll drop a valve. New valves isn't that expensive, but a ton of work, if you do it yourself anyhow

I had been putting off changing to metal glow plugs but recently ordered them and installed today . I bought the vehicle with 78k miles and it now has 161K. A code showing problem with glow plug number three has been on for about a year and resistance read as 2.3ohms done through the plug last year to confirm so I did this vehicle first. The interesting part is when removing glow plug number two it was broken off totally with just a couple of millimeters of ceramic remaining.. the broken surface was evenly covered with black combustion material. Apparently either it broke off before we bought it and engine was repaired and they replaced the broken glow plug or more likely it broken when the check engine light came on but did not cause any engine damage. For once, I may have gotten very lucky. Also, either the broken plug didn't throw a code and another pug was bad or glow plug wiring was put on backward or ecu misread which plug was bad . Cannot post pics now but will try later, btw they were the original 7 volt ceramic plugs. Should I be concerned at this point where the whole tip of glow plug went? Seems it would have already caused whatever damage it could. Thanks Kelly |

Most likely, if your catalytic converter is still in place, there are chunks of ceramic up against it on the inlet side. |

The Glow Plug Harnesses are on backwards sometimes. Mine was telling me 2 was bad. When I tested them it was actually 3 that was bad. |

The vehicle had a cat back magna flow stainless exhaust system when i bought it so guess if it happened before i bought it he could have cleaned out whatever would come out of catalytic converter but surely it happened when the CEL came on and threw the code. BTW I can't tell that a larger diameter than stock exhaust system makes any significant difference in power or economy. It does make some difference in tone. |
