Last week my wife's CRD started smoking & running rough. It seems to idle ok but possibly a little louder than before. I changed the fuel filter. That didn't help. Found that my Kennedy lift pump wasn't working. I fixed that & it made a very slight difference. I found the vac tube to the turbo had a hole worn in it. I fixed that & it didn't make much difference. There are no codes other than the ones for not having an EGR system & a bad glow plug. My scan tool shows up to 19 psi boost with not being full pedal. I ordered a new MAP sensor just in case. My next step is check injectors. I hope its not rockers.

MAP sensor is a good place to start.
EGR is deleted so that cant be a problem.
Definitely want to check your intercooler hoses. Make sure the clamps are tight and that there are no cuts or tears.
The only injector test you can do without pulling the injectors and sending them to a shop is a return flow test. All injectors should return the same amount.

Once you get a new MAP sensor in you can verify that the turbo is functioning properly.
If the turbo is good, injector return flow is good, and no boost leaks, all thats left is rocker arms.

Best bet on the MAP sensor, get a GM one, part No. GM 55206797 :google:
They can be bought for ~20 bucks on line and work perfectly with the Jeep CRD.
Many members on this forum including myself are using one...

Intercooler hoses are good & clamps are tight. The MAF is showing about 14 g/s at 800 ft & 65 F. Intake hose is good. Turbo has no play.

19 psi is about right. 2335 mbars is what the stock tune requests and that comes out to 33.9 psi absolute, so 19.2 of boost.

How is this performed? Can a small hose be slipped over the connector on top of the injector or will I have to get a special connector?

I used a kit like this.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00N2JGZ2I/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_.B4jzbQMNY6DX

But you could probably make your own with the right tubing and stuff.

From an older thread:

pg. 14 - 48 FUEL DELIVERY - 2.8L DIESEL in the FSM outlines the leak-off test procedure with amounts.
you can make some homemade leak-off bottles, see picture!

It doesn't smoke at idle & it idles fairly smooth. Any thing more than 1/3 throttle only gives smoke not any more power. I will put in the new MAP sensor tomorrow. I really think its rockers though. But I want to make sure its not anything else before I open her up. From all the other other experiences I've herd I'm pretty fortunate that this hasn't already happened. It's 11 years old & 160k.

Make sure that the vacuum line between the turbo actuator and the vacuum reservior is not broken.

If you disconnect this line, it will make black smoke and not have as much power.

I disconnected mine once just for fun to see if it would roll coal, and it did but the engine was weak.

the VGT vanes can get mucked up and stick as well. When you have vacuum, watch the lever when you hook up vacuum and pull it away. You should have around 1/2" movement or so. Sometimes cycling the vacuum on and off can work it loose if gummed up.

It had a leak & I already fixed it. After that didn't help much I unplugged it to see how it ran & it was worse. The shaft moves good when I unplug the line while its running.

Sounds like it still could be losing or not getting enough boost due to some issue; you need to rule out all possibilities in this area before opening it up.
You would hate to go to the trouble and expense of replacing rocker arms only to find out later that was not the problem! :banghead:
You may want to install a temporary boost gauge to see what you are getting under the circumstances when you see black smoke?

But if you do ultimately decide to open it up, please consider replacing the head bolts with head studs while you are in there...a wise move

I use use the scanner with my phone to watch the boost. It smokes with about 25% throttle or more. Boost stays around 14 - 19 with moderate throttle. If I do open it up I'm definitely putting in head studs.

Here is a video I took today taking it for a test drive after installing the new MAP sensor. It sounds alot worse in the video than what I actually hear. It sure sounds like rocker rattle to me.

That sounds UGLY!!!
Did the noise and black smoke come on all of a sudden or did it come on gradually over a time period?
Black smoke indicates fuel is not getting enough air for complete combustion!
Still could be not enough boost or an injector overfueling at higher demands...or a combination of both?

I'm going to do a return flow test today. I have checked very thoroughly for boost leaks. Both boost hoses have been replaced in the last year. Even my 4 year old knows what a boost leak sounds like now. Its my wifes daily driver so I only drive it maybe 2 times a week. She said it seemed a little slow for a few days then all of a sudden the noise started.

i had a sticking injector # 1 and black smoke . it sounded like rattle noise . you say your engine idle smooth , thats why i asked for a oil pressure test , you do not want to see connecting rod coming out of crankcase .
