As long as it's a draw-through type that won't leave you stranded if it quits. I've come across a couple lately that were basically the in-tank type of rotary pump that had been modified to work externally. None of that thumpety thump noise from the mag-spring ones, and they are the proper output pressure.

I have a Cummins lift pump and the factory gasser harness (to modify) sitting on the shelf ready to install in whichever our two CRD's needs it first. My wife can prime and bleed the fuel filter head when necessary. But the intank is on the list. Being a former owner of a Ram 2500 with a VP44 pump, I am a believer in the intank solution.

Ever since I got the '06 1-ton cummins unit in mine, I've been wanting to try something with the original unit I pulled out.

I found a place that sells a Cummins diesel in-tank pump rebuild kit with a new pump, pickup screen, and flex hose for like $30. I didn't save it though, so would have to look for it again. The place where the pump fits, the CRD unit has a plastic mock pump body filling that cavity.

You seem like a pretty handy guy, and could handle the wiring and whatnot, it MIGHT save you most of the cost of a second pump unit if you can replace the plastic mock pump with a real one, and wire it internally. You will need the wire connectors for the wires between the head unit and the pump, and make sure to use silicone grade fuel lines for the high and low pressure in the same area as it's immersed in Fuel.

Just a thought.

This video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUnmpSa2IZQ is an instructional on how to replace a lift pump with a free flow pickup for use with FASS type fuel supply and filters for the HO Cummins CP3. The idea I had is to remove the black frame from inside the lower cup, and replace the plastic faux pump with a real one. Basically the reverse of this instructional. I Spent a half hour looking but haven't found it yet.

Ahh! finally found it! https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000BZZ7SE

I am finally starting to get it back together. I had to remove two exhaust studs that broke off. To remove broken bolts I TIG weld a nut to the stud & back it out. It took almost 20 tries but finally they came out. I hope to have it back on the road this year.

I'm going to be installing the head tomorrow. Does anyone know of a good thread about putting this thing back together. When I first took it apart I read a lot but now I forgot where they were.

Where on this tiny manifold do you put the EGT probe? I don't have a probe yet. I think it will fit on the bottom at the outlet. I wish I had marked where I wanted it before I took everything apart. I decided on ISSPRO EV2 gauges since they work good in my truck. I'll be ordering them this week from eGauges.com.

If you have done away with the EGR system, I would tap out the EGR port on the end of the manifold and put the EGT probe in it!

Wouldn't it be better near the center so it gets a better sample of all cylinders temps?

Has anyone tried these thermostats on eBay?

Yes it would, but that requires drilling and tapping the cast iron manifold to install the probe. The exit gas temperature should be virtually the same measured anywhere inside the exhaust manifold!
Drilling and tapping an exhaust manifold can cause cracking, seen it on Dodge Cummins...

As to the thermostat, probably a cheap chinese knock off... :grim:

I use them all the time. They work! Yes, I know I may have to change it in the future. I am not going to Mars, the workshop is not that far away.

I'm finally putting this thing back together. I have a FSM, but I can't find the initial torque for the head bolts. I am putting studs in. Is there any difference to the procedure with studs?

You have to follow the torque sequence from the manual.
Torque the studs incrementally following the sequence every time. Start at 60, then 80, then 100, until you get to 125 for the outer rows and 135 for the inner rows.

Absolutely lube the upper fine threads, washers, and nut face.

Thanks. Where did you find those specs? All I could find is to tighten th bolts then turn them a certain # of degrees in sequence.

There's no "official" documentation for the studs, but this has probably the most info of any thread: http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=65524

And quickly skimming over a few pages, I found these posts which might be helpful:

http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=65524&start=120#p780749
might be some other good info elsewhere in there but I don't have the free time to read through 17 pages :dizzy:

Using the sequence in the FSM & these torque specs I made a sheet with the diagram so I wouldn't mess anything up. I got it all torqued up in just a few minutes.Image

Here is the progress I have made. To install the engine cover without knocking off any rockers. I set the cover in place. Put 4" studs in 2 center holes in front & rear of the cover. Lifted the cover as high as I could. Then installed all the rockers under it. I lowered it straight down on the head then proceeded to torque all the bolts using specs in the FSM.ImageImageImageImage

I hope that was a misprint...

If those are ARP studs, the torque sequence in the FSM is the same.

The Torque procedure and tightening specs are very much NOT the same.

In that post I was talking about installing the manifold/valve cover.
