Twice i have had my crd lock in to a gear and it just goes till the moment of panic resides and i kill the engine with the key. the first time it was at idle after pulling in to my barn and it just chirped the tire and went like you droped the clutch in first on a manual, i hit the brakes and still pushed a ford probe trough the stove and wall in just a few seconds be for i could kill it,
after fixing the damage it never did it till today two years after the first incident but it was in reverse this time, going out of the barn, so i tryed to drive it around a bit to see if it would unlock or shift to neutral. But no, it woudnt even stop with it in 4wd and me standing on the brakes. But again after a restart it woud be just fine but its studdering under light trottle up hill is way worse ( around 1/3 trottle and 2200rpm it sounds sounds like a jackhammer in the rear end)

I've experienced something similar.
Here is what mine is like...

Cold start, immediately put it in gear (R or D), engagement feels soft and sluggish.
Drive forward a little bit, then apply the brakes. Transmission fights against the brakes so I pop it in N to bring it to a stop.
Wait for a bit, then put it back in D. Engagement is quick and firm. Vehicle drives normally.

For me, this was the very common transmission fluid drainback problem.
Solutions include:
1. make sure trans fluid level is above the full hot mark.
2. after starting the engine, let it idle in N for about a minute to get the fluid pumped up.
3. change transmission fluid and filter if necessary.
4. replace transmission pump and torque converter.

Common problem on these transmissions when the front pump assembly gets worn and the plungers can stick not allowing the the TC clutches to fully release which will stall the engine just like a straight shift left in gear.
As others have stated, add extra ATF+4 and allow engine to idle in neutral (N) for 10-15 seconds before pulling off sometimes seem to help.
Ultimate fix is to have front pump assembly replaced. If you do this, think about updating torque converter to at least a Hemi or better TC while you have the tranny out...
