My new Liberty

Been visiting this forum for a bit, figured it was time to post.

My dad had a 2005 CRD and a couple months ago he bagged a doe with it. Mostly cosmetic damage but enough to total it. I deemed it fixable so we bought it back from the insurance company for less than $500 (it has 95K). It runs fine, no codes. In the mean time he found a low miles loaded CRD more to his liking and so now the totaled Liberty is mine. Not my first diesel (I've had a 1st gen Cummins for about 10 years) or my first Jeep (had a '62 Willys 3B in highschool/college that I still miss).

So, last weekend I pulled the rad/intercooler out of the fan. Replaced the lower rad hose and pinched off a split tube in the rad so I could drive it home (1.5 miles) to my shop. Now it doesn't spew coolant but it runs rough, like a miss. I figure I must have split/cracked the intercooler when I pulled all that foward. Drove it around enough to get a code and sure enough, PO299. Ran fine before so I assume/hope it is as simple as that.

I plan to replace the radiator, intercooler and AC cooler plus grill and left headlight etc. Will need a hood and left fender too. While all that is open I plan to replace the timing belt, water pump and hoses, etc. Anything else while all that is accessible?

Down the road I hope to deal with EGR etc.

If you're planning on keeping it a while, it's generally recommended to replace the rockers and install ARP studs in place of the stock torque-to-yield head bolts. The perfect time to do it is while you've already got the rear timing cover off in order to get to the water pump. If you haven't already heard of idparts.com, they're a great source for pretty much anything you'll need.

If you can't delete the EGR right now, get a block off plate for it and unplug the FCV.
Get rid of the factory ceramic glow plugs and install metal ones.
Get the new updated mopar fuel filter assembly.
Remove the turbo inlet hose and check the turbo shaft for excessive play.
Inspect the turbo inlet hose for tears or cracks.
Install a Provent.
Install a lift pump. Doesn't have to be in tank one.

Thanks for the suggestions. Funds are limited so this will have to go in stages. I'll do a search on some of those that appear to be a cheap easy mod such as the EGR delete.

Idparts is a good lead, I may go witth their timing kit, thanks.

I'm having trouble sourcng an intercooler. The nearest used one is several hundred miles away. New ones range from $150-400+. Anybody have a recommendation? I assume the cheap ones are to be avoided but I don't want to pay any more than necessary either.

A factory replacment intercooler will be hard to find and will not be cheap, new or used.

A few folks have been successful installing aftermarket "unjversal" type intercoolers. But its more work and requires some modifications and fabrication of brackets.

The EGR block off plate is one of the best and cheapest modes you can do and your engine will so much better off without all that crap dumping into the manifold!!! :-)r

If money is a big issue it might be worth doing a low-air-pressure dunk test with your existing intercooler. If you don't have the equipment to do it check with your closest radiator repair shop. I found mine had a slight leak at the rh tank/cooler core joint, (inlet side) and squeezing the clamps tighter stopped it, and no leaks up to 40 psi. Seriously doubt I'll be going over that.

EDIT (that's end-cap tank clamps, where the tanks attach to the aluminum core, not clamps for the inlet hose.)

Yeah, it is certainly not the worst idea in the world to rent one of the radiator pressure test kits from Advance Auto. This kit is the one I have in mind and is only $200 in the stores:

You have to "buy" it to rent it, but you get 100% of the money back when you bring it back to them.

Use it and a compressible hole plug from Home Depot like this:

to close off the other side, and pump it up to 20-25psi. A squirt bottle with soapy water is your friend here, and go looking for the leak. MUCH cheaper than buying a new intercooler!

Or find a livestock owner with a livestock tank. Benefit of a livestock tank is you can turn the radiator, intercooler or whatever, any direction you want.

The intercooler is concave, thanks to the deer that pressed it around the fan hub. No Saving it. I may try bypassing the IC with some PVC pipe to assertain that the miss and such is from a leak and not something else. Until I can find an affordable IC.

Anybody know right off hand the inlet and outlet size of the intercooler?

I need to temporarily bypass it if possible, didn't realize the two were different diameters.

I have a 2nd radiator and intercooler I bought this spring. Found at GR Mi u-pull. Once I check over the intercooler in my red jeep I'll have a set for sale. My zip is 49428-9111.

CRD's are showing up in junk yards. If your local yard doesn't have one they can do a locate and find a partner yard that does, especially if the yard is affiliated with LKQ.

Thought I'd update.

Between salvage yards, RockAuto, come-a-longs and duct tape I have the KJ road legal. I've put several hundred miles on it with no issues. Just need body panels now. AC condenser and fan should be here first of the week.

Body panels are the easy part, especially fenders and hoods - there are somewhere around 121,000,000,000 :mrgreen:

gasser Liberties in the junkyards... You should be able to find color-matching parts for cheap without too much trouble.

LKQ sells to everyone and will ship to your location if you are not able to do pickup.
They also run delivery routes in some areas...
They are a good company to buy used parts from.... :wink:

We bought a lot of parts from them while I was working at a dealership in the parts department!

Yea, been watching craigslist. Will hit the salvage yards soon once wasp season is over. Not heard of LMQ. There's one just down the road in Lexington, thanks for the tip.

Probably save up for timing belt and rockers before I get any body parts though, unless I just come across a deal.

And hoping to find a decent bumper/grill guard instead of replacing the stock one...
