I have been trying to figure gas mileage on my 2006 crd. filling the tank seems to be inconsistent at best. my vw tdi said do not fill or top off after the pump stops. how do you guys fill your tank? do you stop when the pump stops or do you fill until fuel is in the neck of the fill tube? any harm other than spilling diesel fuel thru the overflow. last time I fueled up the tank took 3.7 gallons after it shut off for the first time. |

Different fueling pumps nozzles have different sensitivities so filling until it auto-stops would not be a consistent measurement. Speed of dispensing and temperature can also have a big affect the amount of foaming while filling the tank! On mine, I fill until it auto-stops and then I pack a few more tenths of a gallon in the tank until I get tired of fighting the foam and quit... |

any reason not to top it off to where you see liquid in the filler tube? |

Single tank numbers are pretty meaningless, being a sample size of 1, so topping off doesn't really tell you anything. Keeping track of total mileage and fuel, over 5 or 10 fill-ups gives you meaningful numbers, and takes topping off and other variables more and more out of the equation as the number of samples increases. |

I fill it till the handle shuts off, then slowy but steadily fill it to the filler neck. You can get a LOT of extra fuel into the tank if your patient. And i figure that when the fuel heats up and expands, the extra pressure will help prevent air leaks
