Is there a better quality fuel filter that someone makes other than the stock filter?

These are the ones that I found when I did research on this a couple years ago. There may be some more now, but fitment to the OEM filter head with the correct WIF threads is limited...

Primary OEM Fuel / Water Separator Filters Sensor Port Thread: M12 x 1.5
OEM Mounting Thread Size: 16 X1.5 MM
Gasket dia. 70mm x 63mm --------- *Micron Rating

Wix 33647, NAPA 3647 - L-D Fuel Filter ------*10

Donaldson -- P550903 (87mm / 3.42” dia. & 183 mm / 7.2” long) 95%: ----*5 Micron

I actually went to this filter that fits the OEM filter head, although I had to change the WIF sensor to a Racor 1/2" UNF WIF sensor (RK 30964) to fit the higher micron filter/water separator.
Donaldson *P550588
Sensor Port Thread ½ x 20 11 micron @ 99% efficiency
This filter also allowed me to add the Donaldson clear separator bowl on the bottom of the above filter. Part No. P569758

I then added a secondary fuel filter, NAPA 3528 or use Donaldson P551313...

Thanks. I read that thread earlier. In it you claimed you found information that the stock filters were only 20 micron. I like using 5 micron filters if I can find them. What will happen if the WIF plug is kept unplugged? Will this throw a code?

No, and as long as it's kept dry and insulated from conductive things, no warning lights.

Even if you really do have water in your fuel..... no warning lights.

Just something to factor into your decision.

I'd like to replace the factory unit with a racor with a heated bowl but there are 3 plugs on it. One is the WIF sensor, the second is the heating element plug but what's the third? Did anyone else here do this with the racor filter head and heated bowl and if so how did you wire it up. I'd like to keep the heated filter feature but have never had any issues with WIF on any of my diesels. Anyone have pics or a thread of their DIY on this I can check out?

Like Gordon stated, I do not believe it will set a code as long as the two elements on the sensor are not allowed to make a connection to each other.
But as I stated earlier, you can buy a Racor WIF 1/2" sensor that fits a huge amount of different filters and wire it in place of the the OEM sensor! :idea:

FSM says the fuel filters are 3 microns. I have not found verification of this. My local dealer could not say either. They also told me today you can't by just the filter through them anymore. I find it suspicious they want you to buy an entire fuel head just to get the filter.

Everything I was able to find on the OEM filter back when I did a lot of research on fuel filters for the Jeep CRD, stated new it was 10 microns and degrades very quickly from there. Not knowing just who mades the OEM filter for Mopar makes is very hard to quantify it's specifications accurately.

UFI in Italy makes the oem filters.
