Fuel Cooler

does anyone run/ or have fuel cooler installed in their JEEP?

my secondary fuel filter is running too hot for my liking. i'm thinking it would be a good idea to install the fuel cooler in front of the RAD just for the summer and hook up the fuel lines in-betweens OEM filter and secondary filter.

What are your thoughts?

If you install a fuel cooler, it would be best to plumb it in with the return line.
Thats where I put mine.
But its not really necessary. Mine hasnt provided any real benefits.

Why cool the fuel going back to the tank?

That is why you do not see any benefit(and the fact you have a diesel),you need to cool the fuel before it get's to the engine.

That is why you do not see any benefit(and the fact you have a diesel),you need to cool the fuel before it get's to the engine.

Because the fuel has to run through the injection pump and get pressurized to 20,000+ psi, the fuel gets hot.
And because more fuel gets returned to the tank than whats actually injected, you can get an accumulation of hot fuel back in the tank.
Its very common for diesel engines to have a fuel cooler in the return line.
Ideally, diesel fuel temps should be 110F or less (but above the gel point).

Through my experience, a fuel cooler on the return side is adequate. If you need the supply fuel cooled because the fuel tank is somehow collecting heat and heating the fuel. The tank may be heated by the sun or there is something hot that sits next to the tank. In extreme cases there may be a need to cool both the return and supply fuel.

Flash is dead right! Diesel fuel gets worked hard going through the CP3 and fuel rail and gets HOT! So the fuel being returned to the tank is hot and heats up all the fuel in the tank in time, so since it is a closed loop system the heated fuel is returned to the CP3 to be heated even more!!
Kind of a vicious cycle! :roll:

For those reasons, Back in 2015, I installed a transmission fluid type cooler with 3/8 barbed fittings to the left of the electric pusher fan and plumbed it in between the return block and the return line going back to the fuel line. (see pictures I took during install below)

And yes the return fuel does get HOT; on several occasions I have felt of the inlet and outlet metal tubes on the cooler after driving for some distance, and the inlet is very hot. The outlet tube is much cooler, so the cooler is doing it job!
Next time I drive it to town and back, I will get some readings with my infrared gun and post inlet & outlet temperatures... :wink:

thanks everyone for the reply , ill get that done one day this summer , the other day it was 32c, stop and go traffic and i was low on fuel. that's why i guess i noticed the secondary fuel filter was so hot. i'll definitely keep more fuel in the tank from now on.

Why would you wont to cool the fuel. In cold climates the fuel is heated not cooled. I don't see any benefit in cooling it. My :2cents:

There may be a little gain in performance of having cool fuel, but hot fuel doesn't have as good of lubrication properties.

In my racing days, we installed "Cool Cans" on drag race cars. We packed the Cool Cans with ICE to chill the fuel just before it entered the Carburetor.
It makes the fuel a little more dense so it performs a little better. :wink:

Read the temperatures this evening with an infrared temperature gun after driving to a nearby town and back!
Fuel return block on side of intake manifold was 160 deg.F
Fuel leaving fuel cooler measured on bare metal pipe was 124 deg. F
Primary and Secondary fuel filters outside metal temperatures were 119 deg.s F

And that is with vehicle setting dead still with no forced air flow through fuel cooler as it would receive when going down the road at ~70 mph!

So fuel cooler is doing a good job! :BANANA:

Some folks add 2 stroke motor oil to add lubrication. I see the advantage in cooling gasoline but diesel relies on heat to ignite.

LOL guys Canada is not a cold country in the summer time thanks to global warming , anyways , i just parked my DD car so i am driving this CRD 110 miles daily just to get familiar with it , remember i owned it since 2013 100 mile on the clock but took me lot of time to trust this thing , so now i notice some hot issues , ECM , battery and secondary filter are hot because fan blows hot air on them so I'm working slow to cool them down , and pictures WW provides are helpful , note , I'm not driving the jeep in the winter , because they dumped so much salt on our roads .

making progress , removed plastic engine cover so it runs much cooler , one of these days i'll get that fuel cooler

have some hood louvers installed on the hood. Heat rises.......and when the jeep is moving the ram air effect will rapidly move the hot air out of the engine bay.

I use the runcool louvers,little pricey but compared to the others out there a much better product and better made.

Oh and yes they actually do work,with the e-fan on you can see the heat being pushed out the louvers,melts snow pretty quickly.
