I'm fixin to replace alternator decoupler pulley, do I need any special tool or how do you hold shaft while removing or installing?

Some say an impact wrench with the appropriate "head" will spin it right off. Alternatively see viewtopic.php?f=5&t=75841&p=796353&hilit=alternator#p796353 . IIRC there is a tool kit that's not too expensive at like O'Reilly's

I purchased the Gates Alternator Decoupler Pulley Kit as I wanted something that would remove all sizes of ADPs in all applications. Here is a link to the kit...

Decent quality tools for the price, and I can now remove the ADP from the alternator of any vehicle.

HOWEVER...

If your ADP is corroded onto the shaft of the alternator this dedicated kit will not remove it, even when employing penetrating oil. I snapped the 10MM socket out of the Gates kit trying last fall. I got a free replacement under warranty, but lesson learned... you need a set of impact hex keys and an impact driver to get some ADPs off.

The Gates kit is excellent for tightening the new ADP up, and will remove your ADP most of the time.

Thanks, I think I'll get the gates kit, good excuse to buy a tool!

But 99.00 for the decoupler, plus 30 for the tool. 20 bucks more and you got a new alternator too. It's just with the age of the vehicles, it made more sense for me to go this way.

You can get the decoupler on eBay for $30 and either the tool kit for $30 or make tool for less than $10. So could replace for $40 and a little time. That said I bought the Lifetime guarantee one for online discount recently for net $143 mainly because my son has that jeep out of town a lot. Also not sure of how long the less expensive decoupler would last but I think I am going to go ahead and buy one and make the tool to change to have on hand so don't even have to go to store to change it or probably not even take it off the jeep. Doing it on the jeep and at any time is worth it to me. You could also put in in jeep tool kit and even change on a trip if needed .

I found out that even with fully charged battery and not using headlights my jeep quit running in 150 miles on way home from hunting trip ( alternator quit on way there). Think I had a short in the alternator, next time will try it with alternator wiring unhooked that way it wouldn't be able to drain battery quicker. Surely computer etc wouldn't drain a decent battery in 2 hours. In fact, now that i think about it I may undo wiring soon with extra battery in jeep to charge from and see how long it would last.

Also, when i was looking for alternator recently at Oreillys Auto zone and Advance all had essentially same price some had better discounts and looked like they got them from same place , but none had them in stock. I even checked in big cities like memphis and chicago zip code just for heck of it and only one store at that time had one in stock in each of those cities at the time. Napa here didn't have one in stock either. I got Carquest one and when it arrived think it said name of a distributor in California on it.
