Post subject:  Changing Heads which Gasket

It is my understanding that there are three head gaskets for the CRD no hole and one or two hole. I understand that they are different thicknesses. I also believe that they are originally chosen based on how far the cylinder liners protrude above the block.

If that is correct, and I put a new head on an engine I would assume the head gasket is the same as original even with different/ new head unless block is changed.

Is this correct?

Would I need to re-measure liners to decide which gasket? Answer could be in FSM haven't looked yet, no hurry not doing any time soon may buy a CRD that supposedly has cracked head that crank will turn in.

Thanks for any ideas

observe the holes in the gaskets when you pull the old one out. Order the same to match.

[edit] OR just order 2 hole gaskets.
Since you are using ARP studs, compression of the gasket and leakage should not pose a problem.
Too thin, and the cylinder liners won't allow sufficient compression of the gasket to seal the water and oil passages.

From FSM:
Piston protrusion must be measured to determine cylinder head gasket thickness if one or more cylinder liners have been replaced!
NOTE: If cylinder liner(s) have not been removed, the same thickness head gasket that was removed can be used.

Reuse or replace head gasket with what it came with from the factory!

    These are factory dimensions:
    Measure Dimension (mm) 0.460-0.609
Cylinder Head Gasket Thickness (mm) 1.32
    No Holes or Notches
    Piston Clearance (mm) 0.71-0.86

    Measure Dimension (mm) 0.610-0.709
Cylinder Head Gasket Thickness (mm) 1.42
    1 Hole or Notch
    Piston Clearance (mm) 0.711-0.81

    Measure Dimension (mm) 0.710-0.810
Cylinder Head Gasket Thickness (mm) 1.52
    2 Holes or Notches
    Piston Clearance (mm) 0.71-0.81

I use the two-hole gasket on all the assemblies that I do. The VM Specialist in the UK also uses the two-hole on every engine. To date there have not been any issues with this and the engine performance is identical.

Great info from all answers !

I have a one hole gasket on one I have finishing rockers today . I first thought I would have to have head totally off to determine which gasket I would need ( when I thought I might need one and still may in future ) then I saw in a thread where you could see the lip with the marks under the intake elbow. I looked on one with valve cover off I could see it easily. Now at least I know where it is and might be able to see with mirror on one without valve cover off.

Now don't have to worry about it just get the two hole. This would seem to be a better option anyway. If nothing else adds slightly to engine displacement. In that case if i were ID parts I would only stock the two hole but I am sure some would insist on replacing with exact same gasket.

Hey, Maybe we could get a Headgasket Insert about a half inch thick or thicker instead of just a gasket to increase displacement etc. as long as compression not too low to ignite and new tune. Just kidding! :ROTFL:

I do not buy into the one size fits all mentality!
The engineers who designed this engine and wrote the head gasket thickness specifications and measuring procedures did so for a reason or you would not see the instructions in the FSM nor would you see different head gasket thicknesses on different engines.
If you do not disturb anything on the bottom end of the engine you should use or replace whatever thickness gasket (holes) that the engine came with from the factory...
You won't go wrong following procedures!!!

Of course, everyone is free to do whatever they choose... :juggle:

I just used the 2 hole when I rebuilt the top end on mine. Machine shop had to take 8tho off the head to true it up so going from the 0 hole to the 2 hole was probably better anyways.

Its been back together for about 9 months now and running fine.

If you take metal off the head, (milling) it is probably a wise move to go with a thicker gasket if you are able! :)
