Hey guys,
Forgive me please for not doing an extensive search before posting, but I can't make the search work and I have limited time before midnight.

My 2005 Jeep Liberty CRD will not crank when i turn the key. I have moved the shifter to Neutral and park and made sure it was in position.
There is no voltage going to the *coil side* of the starter relay in the fuse box under the hood. If I jump out the relay with a wire, it cranks and starts fine.
That's about the end of the troubleshooting I know to do, so I know it is something between the keyswitch and safety switches, can someone please point me to a thread about checking those? or give any advise? it did this earlier, and just holding the key seemed to make it work... Hmmm.

thanks!

Sounds like you may have a broken ignition actuator pin. Google Ignition Actuator Pin...same setup on the PT Cruizer.

Have you tried swapping relays?
Maybe the relay is bad?
Need to rule that out before you go tearing into the steering column and replacing parts...

If it cranks when you jumper pins 30 and 87 of the starter relay then it is most probably the actuator pin assembly as stated. Remove the plastic covers over the steering column...two Female Torx screws... and locate the ignition switch where it is held onto the steering column by a smaller female Torx screw....on newer KJs it is a "security" Torx fitting that requires a Male Torx bit with a hole down its center.

If you see bits of metal/plastic falling off then the actuator is broken.

You can start and run the Jeep by inserting the ignition key into its normal slot so as to enable SKIS anti-theft and disable steering wheel lock. Then use a small flat screwdriver to turn the ignition key to start the Jeep.

Thank you Dgideon and Billybob. Simply knowing what tho call the "thingy" between the tumbler and switch was most helpful. That is what it was.
