Post subject:  P0101 help

I've been watching the mass air flow over the last couple of weeks and now recently had a P0101 code for not enough air at the mass air flow sensor. The reading that I'm getting at me idle with the engine hot is 10 g/s (I believe the number for health rockers is 15g/s?).

I did go through the diagnostic procedure in the FSM and checked out the boost hoses and didn't see anything wrong with them (I'll be replacing hopefully soon anyway) but they seem to hold pressure fine as boost pressure tops out around 20psi (I do have a low boost issue to that I'm checking out).

After looking at the hoses I cleaned of the MAF sensor and checked the circuit. The MAF sensor was dirty but cleaning did not fix the issue. One thing that I found was at the MAF sensor connector, I should have 2 readings of 5v. With the ignition on I only have 1. Pin 6 has no voltage. I did oh out this specific wire also and have good continuity.

I didn't find a real good explanation of how the sensor works. Should there always be 2 5v signals applied to the sensor? What are your guy's thoughts here?

Was the 10g/s reading when the engine was hot?

Yes, engine was hot.

I do have a stock thermostat currently and actually seems to run a bit cool. Coolant temperature usually averages around 165°F.

I had first looked at the MAF reading a few weeks ago and was getting 15.1 g/s.

Still trying to figure this out.

I still have the stock EGR intact (I have the delete kit and will be removing in near future). If that's got enough soot caked in there can that be the cause for the code?

Also, can a P0299 be related to this?

You must let it idle for a minute before measuring the MAF. EGR is on for 60 seconds at idle, then it shuts off. Once egr is off, then the MAF reading has good value to determine rocker arm health.

Alright, I'll check that. I've been checking it as soon as I park.

I checked this morning after leaving it idle for a bit and did get up to 17.1 g/s. Thanks for that bit of info.

But now that takes me back to my original question. Is something up with the voltage readings I got or do I have something else going on?

A new engine will be about 18.3 g/s MAF at idle with egr off. Yours is drifted enough on the flow to flag the P0101 code.

Is there any fix (besides new rockers)? Does tuning eliminate the code?

May seem like a strange question....but have you checked your air filter? I had a P0101 code thrown a while back and changing the air filter solved it for me. Currently...my MAF readings are about 16.8 G/PS and I am not having issues currently with the P0101 code. Your MAF readings are a bit better than mine so I would think if yours was due to your MAF reading I'd be getting the P0101 as well.

Hope this helps...

Jim

Air filter is a few weeks old. Changed it after I noticed the code. Codes have been cleared few times since as well.
