Post subject:  TC and Transgo Shift kit installation.

Like the title says, I will be installing a Suncoast torque converter and the transgo shift kit over the weekend due to my liberty having issues with the current f37 recalled TC. Im like 85% sure that its the TC thats causing the issues that my jeep has: rough vibrations when accelerating and stopping, on cold mornings it take a few seconds for the jeep to get rolling when giving it gas from a stand still as soon as it gets started. The list can go on and on. So my main question is: What else is required for this install. I have an entire box of the ATF fluid, I have the TC and the shift kit ready to go, I also purchased the flat pan filter that includes the other filter along with the new seal. I will be adding a drain plug due to the pan not having one, so thats ready to go. If I'm missing anything please let me know. I would hate to have it opened up and not have what i need and have it standing gutted. Also can anybody let me know whats the correct amount of ATF fluid thats to be filled into the transmission as Imma be swapping the TC? I've read that its about 12 quarts? not too sure how true that is. Any ways, thank you all in advance. If anybody has any tips or tricks let me know.

Use Loctite on TC bolts!

This is a symptom of the very common transmission drain back problem.
Shift kit and TC will not fix that.
An new transmission pump will.
And if you are replacing the TC it's recommended to replace the pump too.

Simple ways to deal with the drain back problem.
1. Add atf until it is above the full hot mark.
2. On a cold start, put in N and hold the engine at about 1200 rpm for about a minute to get the fluid pumped up. Then put in R or D.

You got the right parts, but please add a new front pump assembly to your replacement parts! There are small bores and plunger valves in the front pump assembly that wear out with miles and age and the assembly should be replaced if you are dropping to replace the TC! (See Picture below)

As to the hesitation when first cranking on a cold vehicle after it sets for 24 hours or more: (applies to several Chrysler transmissions)
On my Jeep CRD, which in 2014 had the TC replaced, Transgo Kit installed, front pump assembly replaced, new Mopar filters, correct ATF with a 1/2 quart of extra fluid, and a Magnefine filter installed, it will still do the hesitation thing occasionally after setting for several days!
Now I routinely always start it up and immediately place the shifter in Neutral for ~10-15 seconds before placing shifter in Reverse or Drive.
You DO NOT have to rev up a cold engine up when you place it in Neutral, idle speed will sufficiently charge all lines with ATF in a matter of a few seconds.

Please Note: I own two Dodge trucks, one a Diesel, the other a 360 gasser, and BOTH of them will do the hesitation thing after setting for longer than a couple of days! The Diesel has a SunCoast TC. The 68RFE & 68RFE both use the same front pump assembly design as the 45RFE & THE 545RFE.
So I always place them in Neutral for a few seconds right after starting to allow the fluid lines and cooler to charge up just like I do the Jeep.

It does not hurt anything to get into the habit of doing this; it only alleviates the problem and is much better on the transmission...

The problem is caused by fluid draining back into the pan from the fluid cooler and cooler lines which are higher than the transmission. So when you first start it, it has to re-charge all the cooler lines, and fluid cooler with fluid which feed the TC. Only problem is, the pump is not pumping in Park, it only pumps in Neutral and all the other motion gears.

I also replaced the check valve in the valve body next to the spin on oil filter that some on this forum stated causes this issue in the Jeep; but it made little difference that I was able to tell!!

Anybody have a part number for the new pump? Might as well get it done and have everything to make this thing last till 200k. currently about to hit 90K

No problem, and here is some additional reading on the front pump!

Transmission front pump 68009879AB (RL009879AE)

Quote:
Severe wear of the TC limit valve bore in the front pump housing results in loss of converter release oil pressure. Reduced release pressure at low speed and idle can drag the converter linings, causing engine surge, pulsation or stall.
The torque converter limit valve spring in the 45RFE, 545RFE front pump can often break. This valve limits converter release pressure. A broken spring can cause the valve to become stuck and result in converter clutch release issues including engine stalls at low speeds.
Chrysler vehicles equipped with 45RFE, 545RFE and 68RFE transmissions often experience TCC related troubles. These may or may not include trouble codes accompanied by TC clutch slip, no lockup, overheating and / or loss of fuel economy. In some cases, the TC clutches may be unable to release TC lockup, resulting in improper lockup functions and / or complete engine stalling. Problems such as these can be caused by excess wear in the TCC switch valve bore, which allows vital control pressure to escape the circuit. Replacing the complete transmission oil pump assembly with a new updated assembly or reconditioning the bores with the proper tools and installing an oversized TCC switch valve kit can restore crucial clearances for renewed TCC control and operation.

I'd skip the shift kit and just do the TC and front pump.

I would NOT skip the shift kit while you already have it out for the other upgrades; it increases the line pressure, firms up the shifts, and helps the clutches and bands last longer...

I am planning on getting the GDE hot tune and possibly the TCM tune from them as well. Still uncertain about the TCM tune though. Hence why I immediately bought the Suncoast TC, at the time I thought it was just the TC that needed replacement. Figured 2 birds 1 stone type of deal.

Alright folks.. I think I done messed up.. I swapped out the front pump for a new one, swapped out the torque converter for the suncoast one and also installed the transgo shift kit as well as a drain plug on saturday. Got done pretty late, and took it for a test drive as soon as I was done. 1st off, I really hope this is just the case, but I filled it with 10 quarts of STP ATF+4 transmission fluid. made sure to check the dipstick after a few quarts, but I made sure it was to the cold fill line, and when I first started the jeep, it didn't have that cold start rattle and shake it had previously so I considered that fixed at the time. I took a quick spin around my street and noticed that it wouldn't wanna start rolling the way a car would roll if it were shifted into drive, then after having to give it a little bit more throttle than usual, it started rolling and going. I let it idle in neutral for a while and then gave it another spin around the block. Started noticing that at dead stops it wouldn't have that vibration but getting off the line it needed a little bit more throttle. Then the next round it went into some sort of limp mode or what but it wouldn't want to shift into 5th gear and felt as if though it was stuck on OD, and then later on it wouldn't want to drive more than 35ish but the RPM's were around the 3k range as if it was in 4th gear or even 3rd.

Any help and advice is appreciated. I haven't check up on it since last saturday and I got an additional 5 quarts which will bring me to a total of 15 quarts that Ill be adding in total. I pray and hope thats the case and that I haven't done any damage to it.

Did you pre-fill the new T C before installing it? If not, I believe a full pan-drop fluid change, plus an empty TC, is likely more than 10 quarts.
Before driving you should let it idle in N, and check fluid level repeatedly until it no longer drops, then fill to the FULL HOT line.

I will give that a go. Since I can't find a definitive answer as to how much I should have added for a full transmission.

From the FSM:
AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
Service Fill - 545RFE 4.73L (10.0 pts) 5 qt.s
O-haul Fill - 545RFE 13.33L (28.0 pts) 14 qt.s

So a dry fill could very easily be 15 qt.s or better....
remember, these transmissions are happiest with a little extra fluid!

Ok, So I added the additional 5 quarts and noticed that I'm slowly leaking some out from the drain plug, due to the crappy rubber o-ring, so ill have to replace that with a metal or plastic washer. However, I did the cycle through the gears, P R N D 2 1 and waited 10 seconds for each and then went back up. It did seem to help much better, but still I'm missing gears 3-5. When im in 2nd and its about to shift into 3rd it has this slight shake/ shudder and then it just gives out and then seems to go into a limp mode or what where its still driving but almost under WOT. I used my scanner and checked to see if any codes popped up (should've done this the first time) but heres what popped up.

P0700 Transmission control system (malfunction indicator lamp)
P0841 Transmission fluid pressure sensor A circuit range/ performance
P0731 Gear 1 incorrect ratio
P0733 Gear 3 incorrect ratio
P0734 Gear 4 incorrect ratio.

I haven't touched the gears nor the clutches when i was replacing the front pump and the TC. At this point im at a loss of whats my next step. Could this all be due to me not soldering in the resistor that came with the shift kit?

Post subject:  Re: TC and Transgo Shift kit installation.

no that won't do it.
It sounds like the final version of the reason I'm replacing mine.
The 2-3 shift engages the OD clutch set. It sounds like yours has completely gone.
Mine just takes a long time to complete the shift.
Try having someone with a good scanner initialize a TCM Quick Learn procedure.
It might be able to adjust to the thinner clutch pack. It's also possible that it only "fixes" the condition temporarily.

Would putting in a different valve body from a 2005 or even the TCM module work?

Post subject:  Re: TC and Transgo Shift kit installation.

Swapping in a different valve body from an 545rfe transmission might help identify where the problem is. Valve body, solenoid pack, or clutch pack

Post subject:  Re: TC and Transgo Shift kit installation.

Swapping in a different TCM module would still require a "Relearn" procedure....

Author:  GordnadoCRD [ Sun Aug 13, 2017 1:40 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: TC and Transgo Shift kit installation.

A new TCM would need to be initialized with his VIN#
The TCM and solenoid pack must be properly matched. There are different models of each.
Jeep CRD TCM requires the solenoid pack with the white electrical connector.
There are solenoid models with Black and Gray connectors as well.
They require the proper TCM they were matched with, but the TCM still needs to be initialized with the same VIN# as the Vehicle to work with the other Modules.
