Post subject:  In search of 4 cylinder sleeves.

I am searching for 4 good used cylinder sleeves and pistons, does anyone have any on their shelf?

Cylinder 1 and 2 cracked sleeve. I can see and feel a ridge under my finger nail.

Cylinder 4 looks iffy, I can see a line but I don't feel a ridge.

Does anyone have any or all 4 sleeves with matching pistons available?

Or just the sleeves.

Just a thought for confirming this diagnosis, maybe take a piece of clear hard plastic and bolt it down to the deck of the block and put the rest of the water system back to close it up and fill it with water. See if any dribbles onto the top of the pistons.

Edit: had an idea about sealing the water system. If you clean the top of the block, you should be able to put duct tape over all the holes other than the cylinders and that can act as a seal, held down by the plexiglass to make it watertight and maybe allow you to put like 10psi into the water system to confirm water seepage / cracked sleeve or not. You will need to drill bolt holes into the plexi, but that could work.

You say you can see and feel a ridge in the sleeve?

Just to eliminate any confusion...
If the ridge you feel is around the top of the sleeve, this is normal for any engine.

I dont know how you can eyeball a cracked sleeve without actually seeing liquid drippjng from it.
A magnaflux test would confirm.

Of course, none of this could possibly account for sleeve seals having gone bad.

At first, when I began to dismantle the engine I removed the injectors and rotated the engine and coolant shot straight up about 2'-0" out of cylinder one. When I removed the head, cylinder one was filled with coolant and after cleaning it I noticed a crack starting from the crest of the sleeve to the top of the piston and beyond. I felt it with the tip of a needle while walking it slowly around the perimeter and it stopped right at the crack. I confirmed it several times. I did the same to cylinder four just now and I can confirm that sleeve four has a hairline crack also. I can run the pin head along the crack and follow it from top to bottom like a train track.

Magnafluxing will tell if any liners are cracked, but not if any liner seals are blown out.

EDIT  oops, should have read Flash's post first

It's generally not expensive. twenty bucks or so should get the whole set done. BUT if you're planning to replace the whole set anyway, it would just be a waste of money.

Just got word back from Vm parts in england ... the old rings are still available from VMmotori,

The piston rings are still available from VM and we have them in stock also, £42.00 NET per ring set.
Liners £47.00 NET each.

The costs of the parts look favorable and I may consider repairing the Jeep instead of letting it go on eBay for cheap.

Not a bad cost at all. Since it is the same amount of labor, I would suggest strongly to do all four sleeves since you are already there and if the other three have been stressed that badly, the fourth probably has been too. Glad that the rings are available, that really is the only sticking point to redoing the existing pistons and saving that money.

Follow the procedures in the manual, and use NEW bolts on the rod caps. Good luck.

I've done a lot of diesel engine work over the years and I've never seen a liner crack, I've seen hole in liners/cylinder wall from cavitation.
As mentioned above, magnafluxing would tell you if its a crack.
The way I find cavitation holes is I'll pull the crank, rods and pistons out, put the head back on with a new gasket, fill it with coolant and put some pressure on the cooling system.
Now you'll have to fabricate some way to close it up and put a schrader valve on it, but you'll find the leak. one time I had to put 100 PSI on the system to get it to leak.

Can you post up the link for the VM parts source in England?
I've got a Jeep CRD here that looks like I'm going to need a head, liner, and piston for.

Anybody ever buy parts from across the pond before? how'd it work out?

I bought a complete, fully assembled, VMM head from IDParts.

No complaints. It's running beautifully.

new factory VMM camshafts,

new factory VMM hydraulic lifters, and followers.

VMM head gasket..

Etc.

I figure if someone has gone through the trouble and expense to make such things available, competitively priced, and in stock HERE, so these fun little tractors stay viable, I'll spend my money on this side of the pond..

But even with all factory parts, results will vary from case to case depending on how properly the rebuilding is done.

100 PSI? Wow I've never heard of a cooling system running that kind of pressure! Aluminum is a fairly porous and soft metal, and the coolant system walls aren't built like the combustion chamber, to handle that kind of pressure.

That is a significant crack.
Thanks for posting the picture.

That's a crack. How hot did it get?

Low coolant light came on. Coolant escaping out the bottle when I got off the highway, parked it and went to get coolant. Upon my return, all the coolant was gone from the bottle and went into the pan. I believe that the sleeve or sleeves cracked then ..... hot engine no coolant.

For your info, the temperature gauge pegged close to the red on a previous occasion same as it did now. It happened last year in August on the same day that the engine was put back together from major repairs.

It happened during the long drive home from Rhode Island while going up steep hills on the highway. It never happened again after that until the other day when all heck broke loose, I was traveling on the same highway, going up very steep inclines and it pegged close to the red again.

I have no clue as to what could have caused this and ideas are welcomed.

I am planning to pull the block this weekend and inspect it for cracks. Never done this before and I am reading the relative material as fast as I can and hopefully not making mistakes as fast as I can.

I spoke to Keith At GDE today, I respect his advice .... he said it may have been the high torque that we place on the ARP studs that could have caused a crack in the block, and to check the corner on the block that is the nearest to number 4 cylinder and the turbo.

A second set of eyes would be very helpful right now, especially a professional set.

Engine rebuild coming along nicely. For the non professional mechanic, Harbor Freight tools is a friend.

Good news !
Thats a great looking jeep. Hope you get it going without any major setbacks or cost overruns. i know its very frustrating having to do all the work you did once already plus the additional work and costs.

Yes, it is frustrating having to do the work again. This time around though the engine had to come out, a job that I have never done before and if it weren't for Geordie (Jim Hulse) directions/instructions and this forum, I would never have attempted it and this goes for Sam (SirSam) also. Stand-up guys who truly want to help.

So far I've learned that a 750lbs engine stand does not work with our 500lbs engine ... it tipped and fell when I attempted to rotate it, and I'm glad that I am here to talk about it. Upgrade stand to the 2000 lbs capacity.

I've learned that an engine lift does not roll on asphalt ... change the casters to the heavy duty rubber.

I've learned not to over torque the ARP studs past 125lbs, for fear of cracking the block at the weakest spot near the turbo.

ARP recommends a torque of no more than 125LBS, GDE (Keith) suggests that it should be even lower and to follow the manufacturers TTY bolts torque limits to be on the safe side.

What say you?

Well, this is not good.

I am reusing the ARP studs, and while installing the first one it snapped / broke in two, showing signs of stretching, the other half is still in the head.

I thought that the ARp studs could be reused.
