Thursday afternoon my fan bracket bearing went out. I was extremely lucky because I was in a parking lot idling at the time. The radiator and fan were not damaged. I removed the belt and drove it slowly home (2 miles). When I parked at home I noticed the engine was loping. Is this from the accessory belt not being there? Which accessory would cause that? The temp gauge was at normal straight up.

Could be related to the alternator and/or AC compressor no longer being driven by the belt. Either one could be cutting in and out and making the ECU do weird things to engine operation. Just a reminder the AC compressor can turn on/off even if AC switch is not "on" depending on what vent mode you are in.

thanks for the reply. I'm curious to see if it corrects itself after I put it back together.

I suspect it will.

When my alternator died a couple of years ago, I was about 10 miles from home so I drove it on home with no alternator charging.
When I got home and let it idle, it was loping and sounding weird like it was not happy.
Battery voltage was down to ~9 volts or a little less measured with a digital Fluke meter.
As soon as I replaced the alternator with a new one and charged the battery up with a charger, it started and ran perfect even at idle. The lope and weird idle completely disappeared....

Bet yours does too!

Most likely.

Any/all of them. The belt-driven accessories add a load on the engine (or more than anything, just additional rotating mass), causing engine speed to respond slower to fuel being added/removed. Without the belt, engine RPM can increase/decrease more quickly causing the PCM to have a hard time holding a constant RPM. Basically the belt-driven accessories act like a flywheel.

You're ok there; the water pump is driven by the timing belt on this engine so it's still circulating coolant without the serpentine/accessory belt.
