The shims are not that thick! I think you are beating a dead horse here! :roll:

A good machine shop, when doing a valve job, will check the installed height of the spring/valve/retainer assembly and ensure that the installed spring pressure is acceptable. If necessary, thin steel shims can be used at the base of the spring to bring it all into spec.

Exactly what I was saying! Thanks.
When grinding valve seats and valves, clearances are added by the removal of metal and spring pressure must be maintained to original specifications by adding the thin spacer shims under the valve springs! Any good automotive machine shop knows and performs these operations!

Timing Belt replaced at 95406 miles.

Reconnected EGR pipe and blocked off exhaust to intake.
