Post subject:  Transmission - Broken Front Driveshaft
After a glorious day at the lake, swimming and kayaking, we were backing the trailer up a small hill and 'Bang, clunk, clunk' from the transmission.

After a sleepless night wondering about replacement transmissions, having to buy new car, etc, inspection the next day showed that the front drive shaft CV joint had broken. Most likely caused by water getting into a torn/damaged boot I guess.

Fortunately drive shafts are a lot cheaper than transmissions, and apparently the 3.7 has the same as the CRD.... so head out to breaker yard to pull a replacement. Was fairly easy to remove shaft - remove 6x 8mm bolts at each end, enough sloop/clearance in the system to allow the shaft to move up (at front differential end) and then out (at transfer case end).

Were you in 4wd when it broke? That's crazy.

I towed 2.4 tons of wood pellets on a steel car trailer, so probably 6500/7k lbs, and had to get it up the road in front of my house which was easily 10%. I had to put it in 4 lo to get it moving and the thing literally did a 4wd burnout on pavement. Nothing broke, lol, but I did end up having to replace both u joints on the rear axle 6 month later.

Get a good brand when you replace that CV joint.
I used Detroit Axle. The grease boot failed in 110 miles.
Front prop shaft is still off the rig.

I couldn't find a boot kit at Sasquatch or IDParts.
WWDiesel recommended Driveshaft Parts USA. I've ordered the boot but not yet received it. Their prices seem pretty good. That joint kit is ME-807

Yes, but I think this issue has been brewing for a while. I could also point out that I had everyone including my mother-in-law in the car at the time... perhaps that was the tipping point. ;-)

Not 100% sure they are all made in China, could be but don't remember seeing that on the box on the parts I got from Detroit Axle!
Unfortunately, there are not a lot of choices when it comes to buying these parts at a reasonable price! :roll:
You can buy the replacement CV joint kits from Detroit Axle, Dorman, Driveline Parts or you buy the whole driveshaft with all new parts from Mopar which cost around $450 dollars... :shock:

Do you have a better option?

When I ordered LBJ's from Detroit Axle, 3 out of 4 were the incorrect part. The one that was correct was an actual MOOG part, and even it was made in China.

Not ALL things made in China are bad quality, but it's definitely a gamble. Even so, 110 miles for a cv grease boot is exceptionally poor. Perhaps I should get them by the dozen... :P

MOOG makes the OEM LBJ's for Chrysler,to there specs mot MOOG's and why they where made in China.The good MOOG's are made in the US.

A little update for everyone... so it turns out that the front driveshaft from the 3.7L is NOT compatible CRD. As fate had it I pulled one from a Grand Cheeroke (middle in picture) as breaker #1 didn't have any Libertys, and then pulled one (bottom) from 3.7L Liberty at breaker #2 later in the day. Live a long way out of town so pulling and returning was the better option.

When installing I found that the shaft was around 5mm too long to install into the cup, so ended up removing the engine skid plate (swear at those 16mm bolts every time... why 16mm, and not 15mm or 17mm which I have in every socket set, no has to be the special 16mm bolt...), removing the 3 bolts on the side of the front differential and then jacking it up a little to increase the angle of the cup. The drive shaft then dropped in easily.

The 'new' driveshaft was still pretty crappy, with a torn boot at the TC end. But got the vehicle running again at a time that my wife really needed it. May look to replace later when I find a better one.

FYI, 16mm and 5/8 standard are basicly the same size and interchangeable.
so, if you got some 5/8's use them in place of the 16mm..... :wink:
