I let the jeep get low on oil and it fried the turbo.

Sorry to hear that. Better the turbo than the mains or rods.

The question is, where was the oil leak?

Seems most likely that the turbo wore out first, creating the oil leak and loss of oil.

My guess is that the turbo was leaking the oil. I know I am losing a little thru the provent.

I finally got all four studs on the exhaust manifold torqued to spec... I thought I was going to lose my mind! Now to tackle the oil return line, then I can move on to the intake.

Anyone know of a good way to check this connection?

What connection? The return line? It is a gasket at the top connection and a bung at the bottom. Ensure that it doesn't leak at either end and you're good to go. The turbo-to-manifold connection? Go to your nearest tool store and buy every darn extension, swivel and socket depth they have for the size you need. Some combination of them will work. It took me forever to finally settle on shorter studs, locking nuts and a ratcheting wrench and I didn't torque it to spec, just very tight! So far so good.
