So I recently bought an arb ckma12 air compressor. I've removed the egr cooler and thought, what a great spot for a compressor. I will start by saying that in the instructions arb says never to mount the compressor to unsprung mass such as an engine. So proceed at your own peril or your compressors. Image

Not really sure the reason why not to mount it to an engine. But the size and weight of the cooler and compressor were very similar. So I figured I'd have a go.

Don't they commonlly recommend mounting it to the frame? That would be the same as an engine (well, except for the vibration).

Why not just mount it behind the back seat?
Would be a heck of alot easier.

First order of business was to create and adapter plate to mount to where the egr cooler used to be. I still had the cooler so I used that to mock up where the bolt holes were on cardboard. Then tranfered that to some 16 gauge sheet metal I picked up at home depotImage

I wound up having to trim quite a bit from that first cut. I mounted the bracket that comes with the compressor to the adapter. When I was done I ended up with this.Image

Now to the hardest part of the install. Which was getting the 4 Allen screws that mount the compressor to its bracket in and tight. It was an extremely tight squeeze. Getting them in required serious patience. I had to remove the flange for the weeks elbow from the intake and had to use tools in weird combinations at an 1/8 of a turn at a timeImage

But in the end I think it was worth it. It's a pretty slick mounting location and it doesn't get too hot on that side. Which was probably my biggest concern. Here it is all tidy in its new homeImage

I extended the intake and filter up higher on the firewall.
Used 5/8 od 3/8 id braided clear hose from home depot. Also used the same hose to plumb the outlet through the front bumper Image

Mounted the switch right next to the one for the front lockerImage

With everything reassembled you can barely even see it and with the engine running you almost can't hear it either.

I have to admit, that's really quite slick, and keeping the sound out in the engine compartment is a bonus.
Very nice!
Are you going airlocker front and rear as well?

EDIT: next question.. You've done all those mods, but not done the recalled defective fuel filter head. Why not?

I'm pretty sure they would normally be mounted to either the firewall or some sort of aftermarket bracket like what you can buy for the jk. It also says not to mount it to an axle. I was thinking vibrations as well but the compressor vibrates like crazy too and it's got rubber bushings in the mount. So time will tell.

Thanks. I have an e-locker in the front and a detroit in the back. I'm pretty happy with that setup. May go air locker in the back in the distant future. So many other things higher on the list still

Those compressors get crazy hot after some use and have a cutoff when they get to hot.Mounting it to a major heat source may not be the best choice.

I do agree tjkj. But i was able to touch the mounting plate for like a 5 count immediately after a run on the highway. That was passing for me. Plus almost nothing transfers through that bracket

The filter head is on the list. Gonna do the lift pump first. Believe me, I'd have a lot more done if I hadn't had to put a new head on it.

Flash, as to your question. There is so little interior space already. Trying to maximize what little there is.

I hear ya!

Everytime I do something with this little monster, I'm reminded of an old marine friend of mine's saying.
.."It doesn't matter what it is, there's always SOMETHING."
So I've about given up on trying to predict how long SOMETHING will take, or how much it will cost.
It all just gets done in it's own time.
 Or not.
:ROTFL:
