I changed all my glow plugs a little while back, I had codes for #2 & #4. After changing them, I have a code for #3. I've been ignoring it, don't judge me.

Before I go take all that crap apart again, is there anything I should specifically look for to cause such an issue? I'm kinda hoping I just need to tighten it down or something, but I think I'd actually rather buy a relay than go back in there.

Don't know what your code is, but sometimes the loom wires pop loose.
#2 and 3 can be hard to get on tight.

Also the glow plug harness can be installed backwards, so that the wires for #1 and #4 are swapped, and the wires for #2 and #3 are swapped. So a code for #3 could actually be a problem with #2 (and vise-versa) if the harness is installed the wrong way.

Before replacing the relay, I'd disconnect the glow plug harness at the body side (aka the end away from the engine/glow plugs) and check resistance from each pin to ground.

How can I tell if my harness has been attached in the correct order?

According to the wiring diagram in the service manual, it goes like this:

red/white wire -> plug 1
red/brown wire -> plug 2
red/yellow wire -> plug 3
red/orange wire -> plug 4

That's great information, but unfortunately all of the wires on my harness are black

Someone on the facebook group mentioned that sometimes there is "a bit of white tape wrapped around one end. That is #1."
Mine is no longer white, but there is definitely some sort of tape/label looking thing on one end so I went with that.

So #4 is the one closest to the firewall?

Just replace all 4 glow plugs.

Oh yeah, forgot about that. The wires on the engine bay harness are colored, but the glow plug harness itself is all black. I'd grab a continuity tester, poke one end into the pin of the glow plug harness connector that goes with the red/white wire, and use the other end to figure out which glow plug connector/boot it goes to. That should be for plug #1.

I don't remember seeing tape on mine, but I believe if you install it with the wires above the glow plugs (i.e. closer to the intake manifold), that should give you the correct orientation. Assuming someone hasn't previously twisted the glow plug connectors around to face the other direction...

Yep, #4 is closest to the firewall and #1 is closest to the radiator.

I installed mine based on the "tape" method I mentioned, but ended up with the wires oriented below the glow plugs so maybe I installed them wrong.

Someone said it doesn't really make much difference unless you are trying to troubleshoot it since they all power on at the same time so maybe I'll just leave them where they are.

Exactly. The only thing it affects is which code is thrown when a plug fails.
