I plan to buy 16 new style lifters, has anyone ever sourced the lifters without the rockers?

My rockers are in great shape but the lifters are a solid rock and will not go down. Does anyone know the part number for the new style lifter without the rocker, not the rocker and lifter together as a kit but the lifter alone?

Or the manufacturer name?

Your best bet would be VM Specialist in the UK. I wouldn't get your hopes up on getting just the lifters, but they seem to have the best availability of piece-parts for this engine. Their prices are usually competitive (if not BETTER) than prices here in the U.S. even after shipping. In my opinion, the engine is apart and the rest of the work has been done...I would just do the rockers and lifters together and sleep a little better at night.

What's wrong with solid lifters? Typically hydraulic lash adjusters have a trick to bleeding/filling them. In my experience on other cars, it was always spongy lifters that were problematic, and you had to dunk them in an oil bath and activate them to fill them until they pump up solid again.

I may missunderstand you, but solid lifters would need constant adjustment every so many miles due to wear and tear. The purpose of hydraulic lifters is to not having to adjust them.

How are you trying to compress the lash adjusters? By hand?
You may using a soft grip vice to squeeze the oil out of them.

The lash adjusters have a check valve and a spring inside meant to hold oil pressure once they have been "pumped up." A vice can be used to squeeze the oil out.

So just because they seem to be rock solid doesn't necessarily mean they are bad.
In fact, with new lash adjusters its recommended to soak them in oil and manually work the plunger to get air out and oil in.

And can we please stop calling these things lifters? They don't lift anything.
They are hydraulic lash adjusters.

OK.. so which hydraulic lash adjusters are the proper ones to use, I am using the stiff ones and I think that they may suit the old girl just fine.
