Notwithstanding the above I'd suggest you PM or email Josh and Jim and ignore the endless BS flaming. I'm uncomfortable with the TB apparently tracking like that but don't know why it would so cannot offer a firm opinion or if need be a solution. My underlying concern is there are several places that have "edges" which should help keep the belt straight but if they don't those same edges could fray the edges of the belt which is obviously not good. |

The only problem I can see is that the belt seems to be right up against the oil pump cover down by the crank. But I cant figure out how or why it got that way. The only thing I can think to try is to loosen the tensioner and try to gently scoot the belt forward on all the sprockets and pulleys. Then re tension and do a quick test startup to see what happens. Only other thing to try would be to gently pry crank forward. It shouldnt move. But if it does, that could indicate a badly worn trust bearing. |

i tried easing the belt outward and got it all lined up on the outer edge of the pulley's/gears. Turned by hand an it's still working it's way back towards the rear of the engine. No play that i can see in the crank. new water pump, tensioner, new idlers, new belt. I'll wait to hear hopefully from one of the pros that have seen this and whether or not its normal. i saw a pic on here of another one whose new belt was lined up like mine. any thoughts? |

I'd re check everything. A belt shouldn't "walk" once it's tension. From the picture that water pump doesn't look new. If you cant get it to stop moving than rotate by hand a few 10 times and see if it comes in contact in the rear side |

I see no flying glass fiber fuzzies or powdered rubber debris that commonly happen when this type of belt presses against something from the side. What caught my attention is the belt tensioner adjustment gauge waving back and forth as the belt went around. My own is the only one of these I've ever worked on, but it didn't and does not move like that. I spent time watching it just to make sure that the tensioner didn't need further adjustment and I know there was no such movement. Whether it's normal for these or not, I would like to ask those with more experience. |

Yeah I noticed the tick too. The original belt didn't track this way. I still have the old tensioner, I may put it back on to see if the new one is the problem. Could be something else wrong but it's an easy test |

i say remove everything again , clean and inspect aluminum front cover make sure its bolted evenly and all the bolts are in tight , (aluminum corrodes so it needs cleaning ) |

yeah, i'm going to take it back apart and check everything... make sure the idler mount surface and tensioner mount surface is smooth, make sure the inner cover is right. Mostly i suspect the tensioner, since the old belt tracked fine with the old tensioner. The idlers are pretty simple. long day of work tomorrow. I'll post the results. thanks for all the ideas .. this is one job that has to be right -- or else

I suspect the belt. The jumping frequency seemed pretty matched to the frequency that the light-colored spot on the edge of your belt coming around. Before you pull it off, check the belt between the crank pulley and the tensioner pulley as you crank the engine around till you've taken the belt around full circle. Look for a manufacturing defect like a thick spot. If not that, it's possible that some time in it's pre-installed life, it got folded in too tightly of radius in a certain spot. Gilmer type belts will separate spine fibers from the drive side if folded too tightly, and cause a weak spot that acts a bit like that. That's kind of why I wanted the input from experienced people. |

Put the old belt back on and see if it tracks ok. If it does, then that rules out everything else. Bad belt!  Go get another new belt and hopefully problem solved!....

the only timing belt i'm finding locally is a Dayco. Any opinion of their belts? Going to check napa they don't answer the phone. Dealer has no stock around my area. |

Napa probably wont have one in stock but can usually get it next day. IDparts.com has a Gates belt for a good price. |

napa was 3 days, twice as much, and 15.00 freight. i just ordered another belt from IDparts hope this one solves it. |

we'll hope that it is the belt problem , like the others suggested , if not , then it must be some alignment issue with rear cover , are you sure all the bolts are in and tight ? check one above power steering pump ? rear cover must be secured properly in order to keep everything aligned. |

after reviewing this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_uOjVG1XEs at 6:32, you can see that the belt being changed was tracking similar to my current belt track. I have seen enough photos and videos of the crd timing belt to now think that the belt doesn't need to track flush with the outer edge and clearly the pulleys and cogs are significantly wider than the belt. I got a new belt and took everything back apart and cleaned the mating surfaces and reinstalled and re-torqued everything. the belt is reinstalled and engine timed, and it looks and tracks the same as before. onward, thanks for all the help folks. NOTE: if someone needs a gates belt for cheap i have one from idparts for sale at half price  Pierre |
