Just rebuilt my 2nd motor runs great I have my own design intake heater using 3 bosh 12 volt glow plugs which is operated by timer modual In order to monitor the performance I fitted 100 amp hall effect amp meter I also fitted 5volt glow plugs and new modual in head So puzzle this If the 5 volt plugs are to come on before engine starts why do I only get 9.7 amp draw with key in on position and goes to 45 amp when first started slowly drops to 6 to 8 over the next 3 minutes or so My other diesels are preheat systems this seems to be post heat regards tony |

Where is your amp meter connected? Is it connected around one of the glow plug wires? You said you have 5v plugs. Does your ECM have the 5v programming or 7v programming? The glow plug relay has nothing to do with glow plug voltage. The ECM determines how long to cycle the plugs by ambient temperature. If it's warm out they won't get as much current. |

That 45 amps could be power going to the battery after you start the engine (alternator replacing the energy that was used to start the engine).

The amp sensor is a Hall effect metering device which the smaller of the to + battery leads pass thru the donut sensor to by pass starter current the meter measures + and - direction Good point about direction tho will unplug glow plugs and see results just plugged in glow plug relay and fitted glow plugs. No programming so maybe over voltaged a little will have to see cheers |
