Hi guys, thanks for the info.
I had a look last night and can see that i have a 4 bolt flange on the back, so yes, i would need to convert the dump pipe to a vband connection for starters.

Perhaps the vgt boost could be controlled via an electronic boost controller?
Anyway it doesn't matter, as you said, the simplest way would be direct replacement. I was just looking for any alternative options.

Mass - I would love to strap a high performance turbo to it and have a bit of a build going but this rig needs to be reliable for the family.

Hi guys, I have a 2003 2.8 export model KJ which has a VA71 turbo (waste gate controlled garrett). Well my turbo seals have been faulting for a while but now the waste gate has seized so i'm looking at replacing the unit. My question, does anyone know if a GTA2056V from the 2004+ models would fit and run normally without modification to the ecu? The GTA2056v has the variable vanes and i believe, are a more efficient turbo. Does anyone have insight into this? Cheers, Trav

Cheers, Trav The bolt pattern to the exhaust manifold should be the same, however at least on my 2002 pre production engine the turbo to downpipe flange is different. the 05+ turbo uses a V band clamp, my 2002 2.5 uses a 4 bolt flange. Can you check on yours to see what type of outlet it has? Even if you got a that storted the real issue is how to control boost, the 2005+ has a different ECU and more wiring with a vacuum actuator, this would not be ab easy prospect to make work correctly, however sometime people hook the turbo vacuum actuator directly to the turbo actuator line....this might work "good enough". Some guys with older mercedes sometimes swap in the variable geometry turbos, they have the same issue you would. The short answer is the easiest thing would be to get a stock replacement, it will be a little bit of a science project to get the newer turbo to work.

I would think it would be easier just to get a high performance(ball bearing, billet wheel)wastegated turbo and retrofit it. Controlling the vnt will be a huge pain. It would be very easy to over spin it and kill it if not properly controlled. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Power only increases with fuel. A better performing turbo may actually make the engine run better. Less exhaust back pressure, lower egts, etc etc. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
