Post subject:  Longranger fuel tanks?
New guy here, don't have my CRD yet, but I will soon. As I'm planning on using this for some seriously long-range excursions, I'd like to add an auxiliary/ higher capacity fuel tank, and I've been looking at the ARB Longranger tanks.
Have any of you ever put one of these on your Liberty or perhaps another make of tank?
I'd like to hear from anybody with experience with these.
Thanks in advance and this forum is a great resource for prospective CRD owners... Although sometimes it gets a little scary... :D

Great question, I'd love to know the answer as well!

Just got my CRD, I'm more concerned about lifting it (and paying for that) before I start adding tanks. :)

I think you would be better off just buying two 5 gal jerry cans. That would give you up to an additonal 250 miles and neither cost a great deal, or require a large amount of time in retrofit. In addition, when not in use, you would not be carrying around an extra 75-100 lbs of empty tank.

Its hard to believe that in US/Canada you will be travelling anywhere that a 650-750 mile range wont take you to a fuel station. If nothing else, your bladder won't make it that far anyway so you might as well stop.

Thanks guys. The reason I was looking at the larger tanks is more of a what-if kinda thing. And I would keep fuel in it at all times, not just for when going on long hauls. I have considered using a couple of fuel cans, but I would prefer to have it in an onboard tank. It is a shame that ARB does not make a tank for the Liberty. My dreams are shattered :D

On a different note, I seem to be having some trouble with the board software using Firefox. I cannot write subtractions cause hitting the apostrophe key sends me down to the "Find" window in Firefox. Very strange.

there is a guy that has a long range tank for his KJ on this board...his is a gasser. It's a burgundy Jeep ansd its from Australia. I believe the companies name was Locomotion or Locomotive...it was a 30 gallon tank and I believe they made one for the CRD's.

They don't sell em in the US. Shipping is really spendy. I think the total bill was over $1200...

Buy the RL rear bumper with tire carrier and jerry can carrier. That'll get you an extra 125 miles or so. It would be cheaper and look much cooler.

I had a 29 gal fuel tank on my '81 Datsun LB PU truck, between the steel they made it from and the way it was baffled and braced it didn't need a skid plate. I was worried at first becaused it hung so low but never had a problem. It was well scared by the way.

Ok, so since they don't seem to make a bigger tank, I guess the option is to get a couple of fuel cans.
I don't want to keep them on the outside of the vehicle, mostly because of theft concerns. One thing I've always heard about keeping extra fuel in your car is that you shouldn't, atleast not with gasoline. I know that diesel is less flammable, but is it less of a hazard than gasoline?
Is it worth it to get the cans that are considered "explosionproof"?

I make long distance runs all the time with diesel jerry cans on inside of the vehicle. Diesel does not expand and give off explosive vapors like gasoline, only real concern is accidential spills that mess up the carpet.

Your welcome, I got a cheap plastic floor mat for the cargo area to protect carpet and my jerry cans are almost square and don't fall over easy. But I do block them in just in case.

A few years ago we had a Mercedes 300 SL turbo diesel with an extra tank fabbed in the trunk. It fed into the primary tank below it. You just opened the trunk and popped the fuel cap off and fueled up. We had a 1300+ mile range. It was nice. There was quite a market for custom fabbed fuel tanks for those Mercedes. I don't know if the companies are still around, but they might be interested in comming out with a replacement or auxillary tank for the CRD. Does anyone know of such a company? I can't remember the name on ours and the car is long gone.
