Looks like mine need replacing at 176k. Anyone know of a good source? I’m told to try to stay away from remanufactured units, but I had pretty good luck with those on a Subaru we had awhile back.

check here: http://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/jeep,2005,liberty,2.8l+l4+diesel+turbocharged,1431569,drivetrain,axle+shaft,10439
They have both left and right CV axles, intermediate shaft, and the bearing/bushing for the shaft.

if your local NAPA has re-manufactured units - that's best

my Napa didn't - in fact they said their catalog stopped listing the CRD

I tried OMIX-ADA but they are physically 1/2" shorter than stock

might work on stock - but I'm lifted - drove 1/2 a block and pulled them out

sounded like the bearings were being ripped apart.

ended up ordering from IDparts - theirs' fit -

however returning the cores -best shipping price I could find was $45 for a $50 core

not worth the hassle

I was recommended Napa remain CV shafts. I just ordered the Omixada intermediate shaft from Rock Auto last night.

Thanks, all. I’d read good things about the NAPA units here, but can’t seem to find a store that can locate them. Maybe it’s because they stopped listing CRDs as ATXKJ mentioned. Maybe if they could look it up by part number?

I have a question in to Rock Auto about whether all the axles listed are remans or just the ones that actually say so. A mechanic friend keeps warning me to stay away from remans.

Again, thank you.

My Napa store couldn't find them either. I was on the with the guy and had the part number on a computer screen in front of me. Once i gave him the part numbers he found them.

Note of concern: The only engine selection option shown is the 3.7 V6, so any of these may not be correct length for a 2.8 CRD?

They also list new ones for just a few dollars more!
CV Driveshaft - Left Front - New PART # :NMD 948052

Well, I put in new front axle/CV's from Rockauto earlier this year. Waste of money and more important my time. I am replacing them with OEMs (one is on back order). These are expensive, but I am sick and tired of replacing cheap Chinese junk. Same goes for the front driveshaft. I just installed a very expensive OEM driveshaft because the properly installed replacement CV joint failed within 5 miles. I put a lot of miles on in a week and cannot afford the down time nor aggravation.

If I remember correctly the 2.4 gas KJ uses the same front CV axles as the CRD,those are listed for '02-'05 model years only.

Can anyone confirm length of the CRD shafts? I can measure the Napa shafts tonight as they are at home.

My jeep is not lifted. Is it possible the shafts from Napa would work?

Looks like Napa only liste CV axles for the 3.7 v6 engine. None for either of the 4cyl engines.

Does anybody know exactly what the CV axles lengths should be for the CRD?
Some of the listings on RockAuto state the compressed axle length but I dont know how to be sure they are correct.

When compared to the 3.7 engine axles on RockAuto they do appear to be different but again, I dont know what is correct for either engine.

I'm looking at changing shafts tomorrow. If no one has measurements I can measure mine and report back.

The Mopar part numbers are definitely different between the 2.8 4 cyl. CRD & the 3.7 V6 gasser!

Mopar P/N for 3.7 V6 gasser:
52111779AB Axle Shaft Assembly LIBERTY; 3.7L; LEFT
52111778AB Axle Shaft Assembly LIBERTY; 3.7L; RIGHT

Mopar P/N for 2.8 4cyl Diesel:
52111781AB Axle Shaft Assembly LIBERTY; 2.8L; LEFT
52111780AB Axle Shaft Assembly LIBERTY; 2.8L; RIGHT

NOTE of interest: All 2002-2005 Jeep Liberty with the 4 cyl gas engine use the same CV axle part numbers (L&R) as the 2005-2006 diesel powered Liberty's...
So, If they don't list the CRD engine, simply ask for a 02-05 Liberty with the 4 cyl. gas engine!

NAPA does not list a 4 cyl. gas engine option either on their web search page!

As to axle lengths, found this:

Length 52111781AB AXLE HALF 26.63 (in?)
Length 52111780AB AXLE HALF 28.06

Thank you all. I’m struck again by how important this community is for sharing hard-won knowledge. I hope I’ve contributed along the way, but I know that I’ve benefited a lot more!

Can anyone confirm the above NAPA P/N's are the correct ones for the CRD as I need to either replace or rebuild my drivers side CV half shaft?

I ask as bothe the NMD958354 & the NMD948502 both come up on the NAPA site for the 3.7l gasser not the 2.8l CRD and are also listed as being 24 1/2 in. long instead of 23 3/4 in. in length.

Also does anyone know the actual length of the CV axle shafts are for both the CRD and the 3.7l gasser are?

Thx - Chris

This is what I have on file for the CRD Jeep,
I would check with a NAPA store to verify part numbers are correct.
NAPA Axles (reman)
Left - NMD958483 CV Driveshaft Compressed Length 23 3/4 in.
Right - NMD958484 CV Driveshaft Compressed Length 25 1/16 in.

WWDiesil - Thanks for the P/N’s as these are different than what I had drummed up. I will call my local NAPA stores to see if available.
