I have a 2005 with 190,000, replaced cam, lifters, valves at 160,00. I just noticed a clanking noise coming from top side of engine, it sounds like old gears running dry and rattling, sounds too clanky to be internal but I don,t know. It somewhat like torque converter but it does it when in gear. I searched and seen the alternator can make this sound so I will take off the drive belt and try it tonight. I will take a closer look at the motor mounts also but because it does it in forward and reverse they are probably okay. Looking for ideas I don't want to tear into it until I know what I'm looking for. I will put a video on youtube and post the address later when the wife gets home, thanks in advance |

Could be motor mounts. Could be loose torque converter bolts. Could be a broken transmission dipstick tube. Thats what it was on mine. |

If it was worked on recently, also check the accessory drive belt bolts for each item that was removed. Someone left the AC pulley bolts loose on mine when they did my timing belt and it sounded like internal mechanical noise. Tightened them up with a little blue loctite and all was good. |
