there is a repeating rhythmic from the front drive train on my 06 crd, came out of no where. don't know if it's the front drive shaft cv joint, or the 4x4 is stuck in lock position. I put it in full 4x4 last night getting out of the woods and it seemed to be ok but this morning it started with the rhythmic noise. tried putting it back in 4 full and taking it out but still doing the same thing. anyone know what sound a bad front cv makes on the front drive shaft? any thoughts? |

Its possible that the transfer case is still stuck in 4wd. It happens sometimes. When moving to/from 4wd its best to pop the transmission into N before moving the transfer case lever. If you can get the vehicle jacked up with all 4 wheels off the ground, run it in part-time 4wd to see if you can isolate any noises that way. Or you can remove the front driveshaft and drive it around in 2wd to see if any noises went away. I suspect its coming from the front driveshaft but could also be front wheel bearings or CV axles. |

thanks for the reply, was none of the above. a friend came over and we went for a test drive, he felt like it was a wheel bearing on the passenger side. I felt like it was coming from the driver side. we jacked it up and I told him to check the driver side lug nuts. he tightened them by his fingers. put a torque wrench to them and tightened to 100 pounds . all noise went away, this is the second time they have come loose. this time after being rotated at wally world. I watched as they tightened the lugs with torque wrench, drove it and rechecked them. seems to be a chronic problem with the jeep nuts and wheels. |

That shouldn't be happening. Has any kind of lubricant been used on them? Might want to try cleaning the lug nuts and studs with some brake cleaner. |

Happened to me once. Broke 4 of the 5 lugs off on the front passenger side hub. Had to be towed home. Replaced the hub and made sure all the lug nuts were torqued to 100 fl/lbs. Have not encountered any loose lug nut problems since. I was the last person to touch the lug nuts prior to that happening and I didn't check the torque on any of them. So it was all my own fault. Learned a good lesson about complacency. (BTW, mechanics and tire changers get complacent too) |
