Mobil 1 M1-301A oil filter

Hey guys....
Is the Mobil 1-M1-301A the same size as the regular M1-301? I'm assuming it is by looking at it but just wanted to see if anyone could confirm it.

They are one in the same! Mobil has added the "A" designation to the end of the part number on all their Extended Performance Filters... :roll:

Awesome! Thanks for the reply. That was what I was thinking regarding the "A" designation but just wanted to be 100% sure. I have NO intention of running that filter that long (I usually do my oil changes at 3-4000 mile intervals) but it's hard to beat the $9.97 price at Wal-Mart for that filter.

The Fram Ultra filters are very nice filters as well. The XG8A is what I have been using and it around that price.

If you want a REALLY BIG oil filter, the Wix 51773 will also fit.
Just be aware that this larger filter hangs down quite a bit and can get bumped while off roading, causing a leak.
Ask me how I know... :oops:

I was always a little 'iffy' on Fram filters, but lost complete faith in them when Cummins announced they would void warrantys on the diesel in Ram trucks if inspection and teardown found evidence of Fram filters having been used.

They were finding pieces of the filter clogging oil ports and that was leading to engine failure.

I have no experience with them since, just passing on old news.

Just like oil, everyone has their favorite brand and think the one they use is the best!
But if you do your homework there are a few that stand out above the crowd.
In filter tests conducted by an independent laboratory that thoroughly examined filter construction, filter materials, and filter media performance, Purolator One scored some of the highest numbers overall. They scored right up there with filters costing nearly twice as much like Amsoil filters to name one!

But as the saying goes, it's your vehicle, make your best choice.... (everyone has an opinion) :roll:

Please don't beat me up on this, as I have no need or desire to debate this subject! :wink:

I think they had some issues in the past, but these new Ultra filters are very nice. The folks over at Bobistheoilguy have torn them apart and everyone says they are extremely well built.

I used to buy WIX/Napa filters but the fram ultras are just so much easier to get for me with no Napas near by. Plus I am running amsoils dual bypass 2 micron filter setup so the main filter doesn’t have to be the absolute best.

I'm trying something different than I've ever done before in this arena, and hoping that Blackstone can spot if it's better or worse.

Rockauto had a couple discontinued cheap-cheap manufacturers sales for $1.18 IIRC so I bought a case. I already had a couple Mahle from IDParts.

I drained the oil after coming back from a drive, and took the mid-drain sample for Blackstone. Put on one of the cheap-cheap filters (prefilled), then put a gallon of 20w20 motor oil and 2 quarts of MMO (basically cleaning solvent) in with it. Cranked it to prelube, then started it and ran at 1000-1100rpm for around half-hour so it had time to dissolve carbon and other deposits, and flush them to the pan. Oil pressure never got under 50psi, and there was no change in engine sound.

I shut it off and drained that concoction out, and changed the filter to the new Mahle one, refilled with Mobile 1 TDT 5-40. Doesn't run any different. Don't expect it to. But still was cheaper than Oil-can Henry's. Will have to see next change if there's any difference at all from just a regular change.

The Motorcraft FL-1A is another good inexpensive filter that is available virtually everywhere.
Its made by Purolator and is at least as good as a Purolator One.

If you search the internets for filter tests, you will see that the M1-301A is probably the best filter available from your local store.

I use a WIX 51515XP. Like the Mobil M1-301 it is intended for use with synthetic oil. It is similar in size to the Mobil M1-301 and Motocraft FL-1A. The primary application for the WIX 51515XP, Motorcraft FL-1A and Mobil M1-301 is Ford and Chrysler V-8s.

I buy the WIX 51515XP in bulk from Rockauto for <$7 each including shipping.
