Post subject:  Rear wheel bearing
I am sure I have a rear bearing gone on my 2005 Cherokee CDR 2.8, limited, 162hp, id number 1J8GME8505W557536,

I have looked on line for the Kit the Bearing and seal are no problem to find, the but is there a retaining washer that is pressed on to the 1/2 shaft to hold on the bearing? my local Jeep supplier said there is not one? is this correct I have seen them on others models but when I search the Kits they don't have them shown for my model, is there one on my jeep?

Which rear bearing? Can you be a little more specific? :?
If you are talking about the rear axle bearing/seal, both are pressed into the end of the axle housing! :wink:

It's the outer rear axel bearings they are pressed on to the 1/2 shaft then pulled into the axel when fitted by the retaining ring, my Jeep dealer say's there is no washer to press on to the 1/2 shaft after the bearing. is this correct?

I have just received an email from the dealer who tells me there are "C" clips to hold them in?

That is correct, the axles are locked in place with "C" clips inside the differential carrier!
To remove an axle, you have to open up the differential, unbolt the spider gear cross pin locking bolt (no. 28) and slide the cross pin (no. 25) out of the housing enough to allow the axles to be pushed in a small amount that will allow the "C" clip to be removed from the end of the axle. The clip will actually fall out when you push the axle in far enough!
Once this is done, the axle will slide out easily allowing access and the removal of the seals & bearings.

I would strongly recommend doing both sides since you are going in that deep!!!

Keep in mind; the axle bearing removal requires the use of an inside bearing puller and / or slide hammer combo! :roll:

That explains why I was barking up the wrong tree looking for a press on washer as I have fitted on others,

WWdiesel thanks for the info but your attachment did not load, I understand the job ahead now, can I find a video or drawings on this job?

so the cross pin controls the end float?

now a big job looking forwards to that!

Yes, the cross shaft for the spider gears hold the axles locked in place with the "C" clips. The axles actually have almost no float!

It is not a bad job if you got the right equipment and tools.... :wink:

I now understand the job in hand, but what has surprised me is the fact that there is no inner bearing face the rollers are just running on the 1/2 shaft, I can see an area on the shaft that is ground but what about damage to the shaft surface? seems strange to me.

When you get the cover off to do this is there any way to check the wear situation on the limited slip clutch plates in the diff, is there a stack height or method to check them without removing them?

What oil should I use just what is in the hand book or is there a better diff oil bearing in mind it is a limited slip diff?

I have see 3 video's on removing the 1/2 shafts with "C" clips and bearing replacement, before I attempt mine I need to know that mine will be the same, my diff is a limited slip diff, is the method of removing the "C" clips the same as I can't find any video's with my type of diff?

If it is a factory Mopar trac lok (limited slip), yes the operations to remove the cross shaft and unlock the axle "C" clips are exactly the same as an open non-limited slip differential!

I believe it is a standard diff, just checking as I did not want to find out when I have the cover off the diff that I need more tools, thanks will post my progress.
