A slightly new twist one CPS failure on my son’s 06 driving on interstate from Denver to Kearney, NE he pulled off in Fort Morgan, CO for a break and the engine just flat shut off while slowing down on the off ramp. Called me and after waiting ca. 20 minutes the vehicle restarted and he drove at hwy speed to Kearney off ramp where the engine stall and restart cycle repeated; did the same at each stop light/sign between there and his apartment. Ordered CPS which was installed by Kearney Tire and Auto Service, thanks guys, with the aid of engine pics from my tech PDF. They pulled CPS related codes P0335 and 0339. Engine had “stuttered” a couple of times before Ft. Morgan at hwy speed as if it tried to shut down but was able to “bump” start at speed. No CEL until a while after the Ft. Morgan restart. Most prior CPS issues seem to involve failure to start while engine is hot not engine just quitting while driving at slower speed or decelerating. Kearney Tire reports CPS failure is not uncommon on other vehicles including gassers. PS mileage of vehicle is ca. 89,000 and drive for Kearney to Holdrege, NE and back with no issues indicates problem is fixed. |

Fortunately the engine shutting down while decelerating only happened at low speed say under 20mph but of course he quickly lost power steering and power brakes, they still worked but only with effort. |

Interesting thing about the engine shutting down at 65+ mph. The torque converter stays locked and the crankshaft keeps turning so you don’t immediately loose power steering. It’s happened to me before but it wasn’t a crank sensor problem. It was either air in fuel or a loose injector connection. Hasn’t happened again in over two years. I’m still on my factory original crank sensor |

Just to be clear if if fact the "stutter" at hwy speed as the engine attempting to shut down no actual shutdown happened. If I was to guess my guess would be that there was enough movement in the drive train to initiate an immediate restart sort of like bump starting a manual transmission vehicle. In any case the only actual engine shutdowns were while decelerating at low speed where loss of power steering and power brakes was not a horrible problem. My main point is this failure mode as not the usual failure to restart with a hot CPS rather it was a hot CPS causing engine shut down while decelerating at lowish speed and then subsequent failure to restart until CPS cooled off. Note when we drove to the shop to get the new CPS installed the Jeep ran fine but it was cold so it did not get near operating temp hence, I imagine, the CPS was not "hot". |

It happens like that when the torque converter is locked up as the shutdown event occurs. It bump-starts the engine immediately before it has had a chance to drop much RPM, or the TC Lockup Clutch to disengage. Mine was doing the same thing for a couple of months, but I didn't connect it to the CKP sensor until the symptoms progressed to ones more "classic". Glad it didn't cause any incident like shutting down on a freeway. |
