Hah - that video is one of the ones that I've been watching to get a feel for what I'll be in for when I tackle that job.

Thanks for posting that, and looking forward to seeing others.

Thanks for posting this video - the box from Sasquatch Parts with my Week's Kit turned up this afternoon, so I'll be taking a shot at it tomorrow. The video helped to fill in a few things that weren't obvious from the install instructions for me.

What was your total install time? I'm having to do this in the driveway, so need to make sure that I've got enough daylight to complete the job. Worst case, I'll do stage 1 this weekend and (weather permitting) go back and do Stage 2 next weekend. Not my ideal approach, but at least that won't leave me with a semi-disassembled Jeep and no way to get to work on Monday morning.

As far as how long it takes i would say the instructions Sasquatch parts give you is pretty accurate on the timeline for install , approximately 2-4 hours for stage 1 and around 3-5 hours for stage 2.
Hope this helps as well as the video! good luck and let us know how you make out!!

Cool, thanks for that. The video definitely assisted.

Install time was roughly 3.5 hours. With interruptions, almost 6. Only the Stage 1 is done for now (ran out of daylight); will go back and do Stage 2 on the next warm, dry weekend we have. Thankfully not experiencing any coolant leaks so it's not urgent, but I would like to get the entire thing in.

The glow plugs only stayed on for a second

Not exactly true.

(Mostly, direct gleanings from others' old posts)

The glow plugs themselves are a fast-heat style, and are on, and PWM-managed (when needed), by the ECM, for varied time and current, depending on coolant temperature and ambient air temperature.

The indicator light is not.

Remember the old joke about driving thru a town so small that if you blinked you'd miss it? Same way with the glow plug INDICATOR LIGHT on a CRD - even in cold weather, they're only on for a very few seconds tops, and if you're not looking right at the light when you turn the key, you'll completely miss that it even comes on at all. In warm weather, all you'll see at most is a quick fraction-of-a-second blip of the light.

Quote:
Engine Coolant Temperature, Pre-Heat-Cycle, Glow Plugs On / Post-Heat-Cycle, Glow plugs managed.
-30C 35 SEC. / 200 SEC.
-10C 23 SEC. / 180 SEC.
+10C 21 SEC. / 160 SEC.
+30C 20 SEC. / 140 SEC.
+40C 19 SEC. / 70 SEC.
+70C 0-16 SEC./20 SEC.

So, basically the colder the winter weather, the more important it is, to give 20-30 seconds after turning the key to "ON" before starting.

None the less, an impressive cold start for not using the block heater.

In the cold winter months, everything contracts and the hose clamps loose tension and coolant leaks. Hence the reason for the low coolant light.
Seems that I have to tighten my hose clamps every winter.

To add a little more info

From the FSM:

Jeep CRD 2.8 Glow Plug Operation & Logic

Ignition Switch On (Engine Off)
When the ignition is turned on, the ECM activates the glow plug relay for a time period that is determined by engine coolant temperature, atmospheric temperature and battery voltage.

The ECM monitors various engine sensors. When the ignition key is turned to the ON position, the ECM sends a signal to the glow plug module to turn on, and cycle, the glow plugs for a pre-determined amount of time, plus illuminate the glow plug light in the instrument panel. Once activated, the element inside of the ceramic core of the glow plug begins to glow. Each glow plug draws approximately 5 amps, for a total system amperage of 20 amps at 72°F ambient temperature. If there is a fault with the glow plug system, the ECM will store a fault code.

CAUTION: The glow plug system is a 7 volt system. DO NOT ATTEMPT to test the glow plug system with a 12V power source or damage will occur.

OPERATION:
When the ignition (key) switch is placed in the ON position, a signal is sent from the sensors to the ECM relaying current engine coolant temperature and ambient air temperature (Fig. 21).

Image

After receiving this signal, the ECM will determine if, when and for how long of a period the glow plugs should be activated. This is done before, during and after the engine is started. Whenever the glow plug module is activated, it will control the 7 volt high amperage circuit for the operation of the four glow plugs.

The Glow Plug lamp is tied to this circuit. Lamp operation is also controlled by the ECM. With a cold engine, the glow plug module and glow plugs may be activated for a maximum time of 200 seconds. Refer to the following Glow Plug Control chart for a temperature/time comparison of the glow plug relay operation.

In this chart, Pre-Heat and Post-Heat times are mentioned. Pre-Heat is the amount of time the glow plug control circuit is activated when the ignition (key) is switched ON, without the engine running. Post-Heat is the amount of time the glow plug control circuit is activated after the engine is operated.

The Glow Plug lamp WILL NOT be activated during the post-heat cycle.

I just found you on YouTube after being inactive over here for so long!

Hoping to do my Weeks Stage 1 kit next week. Also since I have to remove the fuel filter head, and am almost to 20k from my last fuel filter I ordered a new one of those too.

Take a look at this post from when I installed it on our KJ a few weeks back. There's a useful way to reorder some of the steps in Stage 1 so that getting the stock intake elbow off is easier. Merry Christmas!

Great tip / advice.

I plan to get my CRD front wheels up on ramps. Looks like it may require the skid plate off to reach up.

Thanks again!

Removing the starter and the front driveshaft also helps greatly.
