quiet AT tires

I can't hear my xm radio! With a good amount of hearing damage, I'm looking for some quieter tires that will still do well in a foot of snow, and survive gravel and steep rocky mountain jeep trails. I'm currently running a set of bfg atko2's that I got for free. Their traction is great, but they are pretty loud after about 50mph. I was thinking of trying the Michelin AT's, but not sure they'll get me through the snow. Anyone been down this road?

I would upgrade to an amplifier and new speakers before I would downgrade my rubber on terrain like that.

Thanks for the advice. I have the speakers, and soon I'll get a better radio, but from what I've read XM has poor sound quality no matter what you do. I'd run ear phones, but then I'd miss more ambulances :lol:

I have duratracs on both my F150 and Jeep. I went from the stock Bridgestone Duelers on my truck, which were basically big sedan tires, to the Duratracs and the increase in noise was minimal. They have been great so far and snow traction is very good.

On the Jeep: I came from stock size Blizzak DM-V2's to the 265/70R16 D-tracs and there was no noticeable difference in noise. That said, I got poor wear on the front tires for some reason even though it had been aligned and everything. The outsides of the fronts wore down increadibly fast and now the tread is super uneven. If the oddly worn tires are on the front they hum around 50mph, but if they are on the back they are pretty quiet. Before that happened they were great.

We have 235/75/16 Firestone Destination AT all terrains on the CRD and 275/70/18 Michelin LTX AT2 all terrains on my 1998 Dodge diesel. Both are quiet, both have decent traction for an all terrain. We have ~60k miles on the Firestones. The Firestones are passenger car rated. The Michelins are load range E rated (10 ply). I wanted Michelins for the CRD, but the LTX AT2 is not available in 235/75/16. The Michelins are available in 245/75/16 (passenger car and E rated) and a 235/70/16 (passenger car rated).

With all that said, we seldom get snow in Louisiana and when we do it's never more than a couple inches.

Thanks for all of the replies. I think I'll stick with my plan to try duratracs, and see how I like them.
Those 235/70r16 are the same ride height as the stock 225/75r16, just in case you didn't know. I'm going to read more about those Michelin's, as I hear they wear really well, and they're quiet.

I put a set of Laufenn X Fit AT tires on mine about 2k ago. Absolutely love them! They may get louder as they age but right now they are whisper quiet. Traction and handling are great and love the look too. I once said I would never run import tires but price swayed me on these and I don't regret it at all.

Thanks for the link. They look like a decent option. I'm thinking I probably do have a bad wheel bearing, or both maybe, can't really tell with my noisy tires. I'll have to go do some tight corners slow, and give them a feel with the tires off. I think they have 200k on them, so they're probably toast. Been needing to get jba arms in there anyhow :rockon:

About 3 years ago I put on a set of Cooper Discoverer RTX tires from my local Tire Kingdom
As much as I say I hate them, they really have been good tires.
Wet and dry pavement, off road, beach sand, and even in some snow (didn't get to try on ice), they have performed pretty well.
They only started humming when the tread started getting low. And its only a mild hum at 40-55 mph.
Turn the radio up and it goes away :wink:

After 50k miles its time for new tires.
Still haven't decided on what to get.
But the Falken Wildpeak AT3W look pretty sweet

I am on my 3rd set (two CRDs) of Nokian Rotiva AT's. Great tire for what I do with them. Combination of Canadian winter with hot summer conditions as well. They are quiet, but tend to wear quicker than some as they are a winter rated tire. Great in snow and ice as well as heavy rain.
