I purchased a used CRD liberty and I don't know what rear end is in it.

The previous owner indicated that the rear end was replaced but he doesn't remember and didn't know what rear end went in it.... he just said that his fuel mileage dropped from 24MPG in the city to below 18MPG soon after replacing it.

How do I find out what rear end I have in a 2006 Jeep Liberty CRD?

The only direct bolt in is the 8.25,all others require major modifications to install.

And hopefully it’s a 3.73 gear ratio that matches the front axle ratio.

Got any pictures, that might help identify it?

The rear ends look exactly the same, i don't have picture and I looked for markings but couldn't find any.

Earlier this summer I opened both rear ends to drain and replace the gear oil and I noticed that there was a big difference in the size of the ring gears.

The 2006 CRD in question had larger gears. When I tried to reach inside it to check for crud that may have accumulated just below the gear ring, my hand did not fit where as I had no problem doing the same in my 2005 unaltered CRD with the OEM rear end. My hand reached deep inside it even though it was tight.

The ring gear on the 2006 CRD is much larger.

Because it doesn't have the tone ring like the '05's rear diff.It moves the ring gear slightly and appears "bigger".

Never knew you're an expert on this subject TJ.... Thanks

So how do I know what the gear ratios is, are there any identifiable numbers anywhere on the rear end?

There should be a tag bolted to one of the diff cover bolts,if it's not there you can either count the teeth(ring gear divided by pinion) or count the number of times the driveshaft spins for 1 tire revolution(3.75 times = 3.73 gears).

Being a '06 there was only 2 gear ratio's offered for the 8.25 for a KJ,3.55(6 speed manual) and 3.73(3.7 V6 and 2.8 CRD).The 4.10's only came in the 2.4 gas KJ's(and 2.5 CRD's) which production ended for MY 2005.

There is no visible tag on any of the bolts, so I plan to lift jack up the rear end and do the drive shaft rotation count when I get a chance.

I appreciate it, thanks.
