I think I have a bad vacuum actuator solenoid. I'll bypass to test next time the car seems to have no power. I am scheduled to leave for a trip tomorrow. Can I bypass it until I reach my destination and then replace it? If I can bypass it, what does it do?

There are two solenoids. A big one and a small one.
The big one has a small filter stuck in the bottom.
The small one is just a on/off vacuum switch. You can bypass it without any issues.
The big one is what actually controls vacuum to the turbo actuator. You can’t bypass it without effecting turbo operation.

So go ahead and bypass the small solenoid. But if that doesn’t fix your problem then you will need to replace the big solenoid.

I believe bypassing it would result in overboost if you actually drive it.

Yep, I'm talking about the little one. Does it modulate the boost when driving?

There are several parts as identified in the diagram below:

#2. is a vacuum reservoir, it is a small vacuum tank to supply a backup or quick supply of vacuum to the modulator valve when called for.
#7. is a modulator valve, it modulates vacuum to the turbo depending on input from the ECM (engine conditions)
#8. is a solenoid, it simply is either open or closed depending on engine running or not. It tries to hold vacuum on the vacuum reservoir when the engine is shut off.

The vacuum solenoid #8 can be bypassed as well as the vacuum tank #2 for test purposes.
The modulator valve #7 should never be bypassed; if you do the turbo vanes would go to 100% all the time!

Thanks. I meant #8.

Yes, you can bypass the small solenoid without any problems.
