It's time for me to change the fluids in both my differentials and I'm thinking I want to swap out the covers on both at the same time. As I'm searching for covers on the internet for this Jeep I can't seem to find many that are compatible with the CRD. I mean, it's got the Dana 30 front axle and the Chrysler 8.25" rear, are there really different versions of these axles? Sorry if this is a dumb question, but it's an honest one. I would think I could order a cover for a Dana 30 axle and a cover or a Chrysler 8.25" axle and be good to go. If anyone has knowledge otherwise I would love to know before I make the mistake of ordering something and not being able to use it.

Thanks!

Any cover for the Chrysler 8.25 rear will work. I'm not sure about the front, since it is a Dana-30A. I don't know if the 'A' designation (which just means it is an independent front suspension model of the Dana-30) means it has a different cover or not. I don't see much point in changing the front one since it already has a drain plug unlike the rear, and is hidden away high enough to not really ever be a problem for most people. Unless you're doing some crazy crawling I can't see wasting the money on it...but someone will confirm if the Dana-30 cover will fit, I'm sure.

I dont believe the standard D30 cover will fit the D30A. I know that OX Locker makes a D30 locker which includes a new cover for plumbing the actuator cable and the specifically say it doesnt fit the 30A.

You will need to modify any D30 cover to work on the D30A,it will bolt up just fine but you have to make clearance for the front diff mount and make a breather since the stock breather is in the cover. Not to mention there is no need for a HD cover for the front diff, that is what the front skid plate is for,if you don't have one get one.

Any 8.25 cover will work just fine on the rear diff.

On the rear, the "G2" cover is a nice well built aluminum cover that has a drain plug and a fill plug! Cost is not bad either, much cheaper than most others and available from Summit and Jegs and a lot of other online vendors!
IF you get one of the aluminum covers for the rear, be sure and order a LubeLocker Differential Gasket for Chrysler 8.25" Rear (Part No. LLR-C825), it is really a nice gasket that does not require any sealant! Silicone seal is built into the gasket, it is really sweet!

Picture of my G2 installed on the rear differential! Note, I did paint it red, it came unpainted...

As to the front differential, simply follow TJ's advice and keep the stock cover, it will suffice perfectly and no one besides you will ever see it anyway!

There's nothing WRONG with it, it just conjures up images of other things with bright red butts. :pepper: And it goes well with your battery Sasquatch.

I installed a PML cover on the rear diff in our CRD. The PML cover is a heavy aluminum casting that increases capacity by 3/4 quart. It has a fill plug and a drain plug. The fill hole is located at stock height - fill the diff until oil runs out and the oil level is same as the stock cover. No dipstick to deal with. The fill hole is on the side of the cover providing easy access for filling. I bought the as-cast cover and sprayed it black. Also, the PML cover clears the factory fuel tank skid.

Thanks for all the input guys. Those PML covers aren't too shabby. I like the idea of having a little extra fluid back there.

Just be aware that those aluminum diff covers will not add any protection if you venture offroad if that's what your looking to do and want a better diff cover.

For offroad I'd be looking at the Riddler diff cover or Crane diff cover, both are proven offroad.

I disagree. The PML cover is a heavy thick walled casting. I believe it will provide additional ring gear protection over the factory sheet metal cover. I do agree the Riddler and Crane covers offer more protection than the PML cover. Unfortunately, neither have drain plugs. I looked at every cover that I could find that was available for the 8.25" Chrysler and decided on the PML cover because of the reasons I listed above. Price was not a deciding factor.

One rock and bye-bye PML cover. The stock steel cover is actually stronger then the PML cover. Those are made for towing only.

What about the ARB covers? They are made out of "nodular" iron. They have to be pretty stout.

Are you saying this because it's aluminum? Or because you've actually seen a PML cover fail on the trail after a rock impact. I attached a link to a G2 aluminum cover stress test. I doubt the stock steel cover will stand up to this abuse.

Pounding on it with a sledge was impressive. Although I'd be more impressed if the cover was on a hard surface. The soft dirt seemed to absorb a lot of the impact.
Not sure if he was actually hitting it with the pistol. Looked like he was aiming a little high.
Not penetrating it with a silenced pistol and subsonic ammo seems plausible, although I'd be concerned about spalling at that close of range. If he did hit it, they are lucky they were not hit with any bullet fragments.

Little more impressive and you can actually bear to watch let alone have the volume turned up.

While I do like the idea of having a drain plug, its hard to beat the toughness of that Riddler. And its price is the same as any of the aluminum covers.

On the other hand...
If you are traversing terrain where large boulders could become a problem for your rear diff, bring someone with you to be your spotter. #neverjeepalone

You haven't wheeled in a heavily rocky area before have you? Here in Colorado that is 90% of the trails and your not going to spot someone every time you run into a rock garden, which can be every 50 feet or so.That would make a long day when you got 10+ Jeeps in your group since yes I never wheel alone.

There is one trail here with a 1/4 mile up hill climb called "Bowling Ball Hill",it's 100% basketball sized rocks that constantly move when going up and then back down. Not spotting for that, just constant forward movement,it's a long trail and you have traffic to deal with since it's a one lane trail, you go up to the lake and turn around and come back.

Plus when you get to the level of modification like my KJ that rear diff protection is needed for the street.Even with my rear diff cover angled at 60 degrees a HD cover was needed when a civic rammed it at 20mph.Still have the white paint on it when his front bumper hit it and pushed the support through his radiator and my gas tank skid(Kilby) took the top of his engine off(valve cover, cams, and crumpled the hood to the cowl).
