Hi all, low coolant light came on so I check reservoir and it was pressurized. Have about 153k miles and truck is running fine. Was hoping to get to 200k and do timing belt and ARP studs then. Have Factory Service Manual but need insight on what should be done while into the job to keep my Liberty on the road forever. Any info is always appreciated. |

Was the engine warm/hot when you checked the reservoir? It'll always be pressurized when it's warmed up. But if it's pressurized 30 seconds after a cold start, that's probably an issue. |

Get the head pressure tested for cracks. Replace rocker arms. |

Yeah, I think he is missing a comma after his sig says "2005 CRD" where he starts the mods. First things first - do the cold engine test. Release any pressure first, then cap it up and run the engine for 30 seconds to a minute. Letting it idle is fine. Then shut down and open the cap again. Any noise / hissing? Head gasket leak. No? Then you may have a leaking spring clamp - they don't last forever and if they are disturbed / opened for any reason, they are more likely to be weak. The cold engine test has been conclusive for head gasket issues on every one that I've worked on. If you haven't had studs installed however, I would be leaning toward the factory bolts giving out - amazing they lasted this long. Unfortunately just replacing them with the studs (and not replacing the gasket) is starting to prove to NOT be successful after a leak has already presented itself. I seriously doubt the head is cracked unless the engine has been badly overheated, but you will want to take the opportunity to replace the valves to prevent any possible sudden failure of those - you are in the range for that happening any day now, and it can happen without any warning. |
