Post subject: | How many bolts hold the transmission to the engine block? |
Last winter, my TC bolts sheared off and I had to get a new TC installed. When doing an oil change a few weeks ago, I was looking at the transmission and noticed several holes--at least 3--that looked like they should have bolts in them. Can someone tell me how many bolts should be holding the case to the engine block? If the pictures aren't clear, let me know and I can get some additional ones: ![]() ![]() |

I couldn't see all of them due to a wiring harness in the way, but the hole below the starter definitely had a bolt in it. |

The (5)45RFE trans has 6 bolts that hold it to the engine. The very top 2 should be "E" torx type bolts. |

Thank you. So from what I can tell in my pictures, I am likely missing some. ![]() |

Can someone point me to the page in the parts fiche and/or service manual that shows the bolts and part numbers? I'm going to take this back to the mechanic so they can fix their error. |

06 parts Transmission Mounting Figure 5-45RFE-120 from http://colorado4wheel.com/manuals/Jeep/KJ/ See item #4 which shows 2 on top, 2 on right side, and by extrapolation 2 on left side for the listed total of 6. It's not clear to me where item #5 goes but that may be 4 more on the bottom. PS from some limited experience on other bell housings they can have unused holes. Ideally bolts removed are bagged and labeled so they all go back where they belong. However, when I've dealt with the unknown (kudzu patch Mustang with no engine and no tranny) my rule of thumb on the bell housing was if it had a hole that looked like a bolt belonged and the corresponding hole in the block was threaded for a bolt then put a bolt in. |

There should also be 2 bolts at the bottom of the bellhousing. |

Took it back to the shop and they added the missing bolts. Hard to trust the rest of the job at this point. |

Sorry to revive this thread, but I'm in a similar predicament... I pulled the engine from the truck nearly a year ago, and don't remember what bolts went where. Compounding matters, this truck was previously worked on by someone else who I know for certain did not replace them all. I know I was missing one, but I may be missing more. Referring to the fiche papaindigo mentioned: ![]() It looks like there are more than six bolts holding the trans to the engine. 4x at the bottom, - between transmission and the "structural collar" - #5 in the fiche, - two from the front and two from the back - I was missing one of these 2x OR 3x at the top - #4 in the diagram - from the back - BUT the fiche calls for SIX! 1x on the side right side - #2 in the diagram - from the front to the back I *believe* there are no bolts on the left side - the starter bolts perform this function on the left side. Perhaps some of the six #4s are for the starter? Here's another look: ![]() Does this sound accurate? |

Here's the diagram from the starter.... ![]() it looks like there is one more #4, but my theory about the starter sharing bolts isn't right. So where do the other two #4s go? (I pulled only three from the motor!) |

[This post has been updated] Here are some other ways to look at that: ![]() ![]() ![]() According to the parts fiche I should have 11 total bolts A,B,C,D (I am missing the bolt for D) = 06102026 (long) = M10 x 1.50 x 70.00 - $10.50 E,F,G,I,J (I am missing I & J) = 06022266 (short) = 3/8-16 x 1.50 - $5.50 H = 1x 00154877AA (fat) = maybe M12 x 1.75 - $2.50 I cannot find the location for the 11th bolt, which is a 06022266 .... this could be a variance between '05 and '06 - the two spots where it *seems* like this bolt should go are not tapped. Maybe I'm just not looking hard enough. The shop that worked on this last lost at least three bolts - I have only seven - but I'm going to order four and maybe I'll find where that 11th bolt goes. ![]() |

The two on top are a real witch to get to. That much I know. The rest are fairly easy |

I have a 2' extension for this.... every RWD car I've ever worked on has bolts in this position, so it's just accepted you need a long extension to reach up the transmission tunnel. I've not yet put them back in - waiting on moparpartsgiant - but getting them out was pretty straightforward. Long booty extension and a wobble socket! |

I found the last bolt..... 4x 06022266 along the top (one of which secures the transmission dipstick tube) 2x 06022266 on the left side, above and below the starter) ![]() 1x 00154877AA on the right side ![]() and 4x 06102026 along the bottom In case this happens to anyone else... ![]() |
