Ok, i was driving my 05 liberty crd, it lost power like it was running on 3 cylinders, it would idle but had a knocking sound (fuel knock?) it would smooth out in the upper rpm's, i got it towed to a dealer wich was a mistake. They changed the crank sensor and the cam position sensor. Now it wont even start they tried to sell me a new jeep so i towed it home. It will turn over but wont start, any ideas? Its my first diesel and im learning as i go.

First, we need some information.

What year is it?
How many miles?
When was the fuel filter last changed?
When was the timing belt changed?
Is the check engine light on?
If so, get a code scanner and tell us the codes.

You should first check for air in the fuel filter and bleed the air out.
Also check all the fuses in the fuse box next to the battery.

x2 on Flash's list.

Does it have a lift pump? If so, when you turn the key to the "on" position, you can hear the pump buzzing quietly from the back for about 20 seconds, then turn off. It's not the cheapest Mod, but it's the one thing you can do that will completely end all of the "air-in-fuel issues."

After all above is done, and it's still not working, check the dealership's work. If either of the sensor connectors for what they claim to have changed for new, aren't firmly connected, it will crank but not start. find the connectors and tug on them, (not too hard) and if they disconnect, they weren't properly installed. Make sure they are firmly connected and don't come loose.

If it still doesn't start, check the connectors for the fuel system components they may have "accidentally knocked loose" to try and sell you a new vehicle.
Fuel Pressure Solenoid on the back of the fuel rail. If this comes loose it will also crank but not start.
Same for the Fuel Pressure and MAP Sensor connectors on the driver's side of the fuel rail, kind of above the #2-3 cylinder glow plugs.

You still haven’t answered the important questions.

Don’t bother pulling the injectors unless you plan to bring them to a good diesel injection shop for testing. There is nothing you can do at home with them other than wipe off the outer surfaces.

More diagnosis is required.
Check the fuse box next to the battery. Specifically the ASD fuse.
Also, when you turn the key on, does a red dot illuminate on the instrument cluster? Does it stay lit or does it go out?

X infinity.
If you try to clean the tips with anything physical, you can so so so easily trash the spray pattern permanently. Even a soft cotton or microfiber cloth with any microscopic (invisible) abrasive substance can modify the spray pattern and reduce the quality of spray, thus flame efficiency. The tip holes are knife-edged and measured in fuel molecular diameters. This is not a DIY job unless it is precisely what you actually do for a career and have the chemicals and equipment necessary.

follow all the diagnostic steps suggested above , if it still does not start , then the last thing in this scenario make sure all the exhaust valves are intact

Ok, its an 05 with 162k miles fuel filter was changed at last oil change, the red dot comes on but goes out after about 4 secs leaving the oil light, seat belt and orange trany light. The dealer said it was throwing 3 codes glow plugs, cam position senseor, and crank sensor, they changed the cam and crank sensors suposedly.

The ADS fuse is showing continuity and reads 12.12 volts with key on

I think the cam sensor and the back injector have the same connector. If these get swapped, it won't start. It is possible that they disconnected both and got them mixed up.

It is not the cam sensor, it is the fuel pressure solenoid and #4 injector that are interchangeable. Will not fire without fuel pressure and without the fuel pressure solenoid connected you will not have any fuel pressure.

I tried switching the 4th injector plug with the fuel pressure solenoid, im kinda confused wich goes where at this point but cranked it about 10 seconds both wayd and got no smoke out of the tailpipe. Im thinking its not getting fuel. But not sure how to find out for sure. Its dark now so ill try again tomorrow. Thanks for the help its much appriciated!

Geordi shared some advice with me when I was working through my wiring issues, that might help you.

With the factory oem wiring, the loom connectors for sensors and solenoids at the back of the head, come out in pairs. (Fuel Pressure Solenoid with Cam Position Sensor) (MAP sensor wiring with Fuel Pressure Sensor, etc.) The wiring connectors and loom intersections for injectors come out individually.

did you check fuel pressure , any fault codes ? and if you decide to remove injectors for testing , get some paper towel and push it into each injector cup, then bar engine over should work like a popcorn machine if they all pop out from the injector holes you are building some pressure inside the cylinders, i mean that is what i would do ,,,,, if no special tools were available lol

Im not sure how ti check the fuel pressure, and how do you bar the engine over?

to check the fuel rail pressure you need scan tool or torque pro, to bar engine over without injectors and paper towel pushed into injector cups you can briefly crank it over for about 2, 3 sec, hood open, so you can watch them fly out. that may tell us if exhaust valves are working , injector testing is about 35 dollars each at fuel injection shops.

:furious: Just got my jeep back from mechanic he did very little to try to fix it over the last 6 months. its like all the mechanics around me are not willing to work on this vehicle. I am going to try again to do this now that its not freezing cold ive got hi hopes. but first 4 days of work.

At this point I'd suggest to Call one of the eastern traveling CRD mechanics and make an arrangement with them. It may be more expensive than your clueless local shops, but at least you will be dealing with someone who has experience with these rigs.
